Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Kirkby Stephen, Faraday Road, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4QL

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night when 1,874 sheep were forward consisting of 517 spring lambs, 809 prime hoggs and 548 cast sheep.

Topping at 460.5p/kg were 38kg Beltex cross lambs which sold for £175 from Messrs Skelton, Low House, Maryport.

Messrs Skelton sold a pair of lambs with the proceeds going to Glasgow Hospital for Sick Children and Bridekirk Dovenby School, with both these been of great support to The Skelton Families son, Thomas.

After frenzied bidding the hammer came down at £350 each which was matched by Messrs Skelton and Harrison & Hetherington donating a further £100 the final amount raised totalled £1500, with the lambs being joint purchased by J. Blenkhorn on behalf of Yorkshire Halal Meats & P. Burton on behalf of West Scottish Lamb.


Charity Lambs

Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold a pair of 42kg Beltex cross lambs to make £189.

Messrs Lyle, Staingills, Penrith sold 42kg Beltex cross lambs to make £186, with another pen of 38kg lambs making £174 (457.9p/kg) from this home.

Trade for spring lambs was one of the dearest seen with an SQQ average of 360.4p/kg and an overall sale average of 358.7p/kg being achieved. This equated to a sale average of £144.76 per head!

31 pen and 107 lambs sold between 400-460p/kg

31 pen and 90 lambs sold between £160-£189

128 Beltex cross lambs sold to average a whopping £157.01 and 400p/kg

The Anniversary show which saw a fantastic entry of pairs of lambs in each class was ably judged by local supporter Mr H. Birkbeck, Castle Hill who awarded the overall championship to the first placed pair of Beltex cross lambs from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan which weighed 42kg and sold for £182.

The overall reserve pair of lambs were awarded to the first placed any other breed from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm which a pair of Dutch Texel cross lambs which weighted 43kg and sold for £185 to Messrs Birkbeck on behalf of Dowding Butchers, Appleby.

Many more lambs are required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand from 14 active buyers here at Kirkby Stephen.

Prime hoggs topped the sale at £191 for 63kg Texel cross hoggs from Messrs Watson, Whygill Head purchased by L Broster, Huddersfield.

Topping at 334.7p/kg were a pen of 49kg Beltex hoggs which sold for £164 from Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm, Penrith.

Hill cheviot hoggs sold to £175 for a pen of seven 57kg hoggs from Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Penrith.

Cast sheep topped twice at £156 firstly for a Beltex cross ewe from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk and also for a pair of Texel cross ewes from Messrs Bainbridge, Laneside, Barnard Castle.

Blackfaced ewes topped at £112 for a pen of three from Messrs Heelis, Eden Vale, Warcop, with this same home topping with Herdwick ewes at £100.50.

Swaledale ewes topped at £106.50 for a pair from Messrs Elliot, Harbour Flatt, Murton.

All classes of cast sheep were dearest as well with many being a good £10-£15 up.
