BIG BALCRAIG SHINE AT BORDERWAY
Borderway was once again packed with quality dairy cattle for the August Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale. Consignments of freshly calved cows, dry cows and in calf heifers from across Scotland and the North of England attracted a huge crowd of buyers recorded from 15 counties. Trade topped at £3500 on five occasions with the trade for the milking cattle averaging £2681.
It is worth noting that milking animals, full vaccinated for Blue Tongue, and therefore able to travel to the three home nations averaged £2870 over £200 more than the non-vaccinated cattle and fully vaccinated in calf heifers averaged £332 more.
The Wadsworth family from Big Balcraig Farm in Newton Stewart sold nine exceptional heifers with three selling for £3500 to average £3287. They were sired by Hannity, Hardball and Captivate and all had high PLI and were producing oceans of milk.
Kaemuir Holsteins sold a super group of cows and heifers topping at £3500 to average £3043. Topping at £3500 was Kaemuir Envoy Breeze who was sired by Bomas Envoy and was giving 42kgs.
The Dunnerdale herd consigned an impressive group of heifers topping at £3450 for Dunnerdale Mingus Iris who was bred from a Cogent Supershot dam with massive production.
Dry cows sold to a top of £3000 for Boclair Lambda Elegance from the Innes family, Nairn. This 3 year old due in September with her second calf to Carldanton Lambda Leroy.
In calf heifers were once again in demand topping at £3200 to average £2123. The best trade for the in calf heifers went to Edward and Linda Wilson from Petteril Hill sold six heifers to average £2700 and topped at £3200 for a powerful framed heifer due in September to Westcoast Guarantee sexed.
Our next dairy sale at Borderway is the Border & Lakeland Club Sale on Wednesday 20th August and features 150 freshly calved cows and heifers. On Thursday 28th August the Nethervalley NexGen Sale takes place featuring 250 pedigree Holsteins along with a small select group of Jersey at Shackelhill Farm in Ayrshire.
