On Monday 31st May Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock. A great entry of 245 Cast Cows, Bulls, Prime Cattle and 1461 prime sheep was on offer on Bank Holiday Monday.
PRIME BULLS: A much smaller show of 42 Prime bulls on this Bank Holiday Monday. Despite lack of numbers there was no lack of trade with all classes far dearer on the week for the mixed show evident. Top overall was a superb Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat achieving a days top of £1982.48 and purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. A Limousin out of the Holstein Friesian cow from Messrs Irving, Becton Hall, Canonbie sold to a top of £1393.79 and a British Blue out of the dairy cow from Messrs Wainwright, Castle Farm, Carlisle selling to £1392.33 purchased by Bowland Foods and Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top overall pence per kilo of 247.5p was attained for the aforementioned Limousin from the Reddings. Dairy bred bulls to £1354.82 for a Friesian from local farmers Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton purchased by Bowland Foods. Holstein Friesians from Messrs Murray, Conheath, Dumfries to £1257.53 purchased by Capper Farming. Top overall pence per kilo of 207.5p for a Friesian from Messrs Reed, Croft House, Carlisle. PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of only 35 Prime steers and heifers forward with an increased trade received on the week. Topping the sale at £1824.53 was an outstanding 765kg Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle. Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie sold another to £1805.83, 754kgs both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo steer and overall top of 259.5p was attained by Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton with a Limousin cross, this was purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Heifers were sold to a top of £1639.10 (740kg) from Petteril Hill Farm once again followed by £1631.35 (641 kgs) for another from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods and Bowland Foods, Preston. Top price per kilo of 255.5p and 254.5p was achieved by Messrs Story, Newbiggin, for 608kg and 641kg Limousin crosses and both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Messrs Malone, Pitcairn sold a Limousin cross cow 792kg, 215.5p, £1706 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Storey & Son, Woodhead Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 733kg, 210.5p, £1542 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Johnston & Son, Orton Hall sold a Limousin cross cow for 781kg, 195.5p, £1526 and 781kg, 195.5p, £1421 to Michael Helliwell. Mr Steven Illingworth, Howgillside sold the top priced Charolais cross cow for 761kg, 196.5p, £1495 to David Holmes. PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 31st May 2021 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 1461 prime sheep, spring lambs came forward in greater numbers with quality a plenty, the top 33 pens of lambs sailed past 400ppk with 32 pens smashing £170 to a top of £220 for Beltex lambs from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall who also topped per kilo at 461p for a 39kg Beltex selling at £180 to average £169.77 (403.15ppk) for 32 head. A sale average of 350ppk was achieved which equates to £145.11 per head. This in stark contrast to last years May Bank Holliday sale which topped at £135 a head and 316.7ppk; every lamb forward from 34-57.5kg was met with a ferocious appetite ringside.
Gary Bell, Haas Side, Lockerbie sold a run of Texel cross lambs to average £182.80 per head, 417.35ppk to a top of £187. Suffolks sold to a top of £174 from Messrs Story, Jacksonrigg, Longtown and to 379.8ppk from Messrs Harrison, Tofts, Hexham.

CAST SHEEP: A larger show of 352 cast ewes and rams where trade was flying for all classes of ewes. Once again rams were in serious demand and topping today’s sale was £180 for 2 Texel rams from Messrs Palmer, Grange Farm. Cast rams sold to average £155.45. Ewes were far sharper on the week and a whole sale average of £97 was achieved. Topping the section at £156 for a cracking Beltex ewe from Messrs Batty, Flimby Hall. Many good continental ewes sold to £140 plus. Mules continue to sell with ease topping at £112 twice, firstly from Messrs Brough, The Clappers and secondly from Messrs Sim, Chapel House. A strong ringside of buyers present for cast sheep ensured all were well bid for and many more could be sold to vendors advantage.
