PRIME BULLS (85):
A larger and better show of 85 prime bulls forward, selling at a sharper trade throughout for all classes. Topping the sale overall was one of the furthest travelled bulls from Strattons Farms down in Berkshire, their 1^st prized Limousin bull sold at £3503.52 for 811kgs. The six bulls from this home averaged 766.83kgs, 431.88 ppk and a total of £3311.82. Simmental bulls from Messrs Marshall, Starlaw Farm, Bathgate, West Lothian topped at £3229.20 for a 13 month old, and averaged £3183.83 for 9, three bulls at 892kgs, 356ppk. Two bulls sold to 440ppk, firstly, was 779kgs for Strathen Farms and secondly was 745kgs for Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House.

Dairy bulls sold to a top of £2311.96 for a 718kg Holstein Friesian from Glenapp Estate, Ballantrae, Girvan. Messrs Waugh, Albyfield, Carlisle, sold the best Holstein to £2138.08 for 644kgs. Top price per klilo of 375p went to a 607kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Roan, Barnbarroch, Dalbeattie and 350pph for 601kgs from Glenapp Estate.

PRIME CATTLE:

A much larger and improved show of 86 prime steers and heifers were forward at Borderway’s weekly primestock sale. Trade showed yet another jump on last week's trade, as the steam train picks up even more momentum. Thirteen sold for over £3000, steers averaged £2738.72 and heifers at £2538.68 with an overall of £2637.52. Top overall went to a 920kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton, achieving a whopping £3680.16. Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle, sold 885kgs to £3610.80. Messrs McLelland, Knockshinnoch, Dumfries selling 821 kgs to £3448.20 and Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold for 797kgs to £3395.22. Simmental crosses sold to £3263.88 from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton for 922kgs. Top pence per kilo steer went to a 747kg Limousin cross from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton, sells to 430pph purchased by A&D Meats.

Heifers saw five sell over £3000 to a day's top of £3222.60 for 820kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton, selling to Mr Eric Hall. Next best was a 697kg Limousin cross from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle, achieving £3066.80 purchased by R+JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop. 718kgs from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg sold to £3058.68 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top price per kilo overall of 440ppk was achieved twice, first by the pre-sale show champion which was ably judged by Charles Anderson, Dumfries and was kindly sponsored by Oil Fast Fuel and Fleet Solutions Group engineering contractors. The champion was found in a 692kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Story, Newbriggin Farm, Carlisle selling to 440 pence per kilo and was purchased by the judge on behalf of Bowland Foods, Preston.

Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, ran late for the show and missed, but found the best pence per kilo of 440 in the sale ring selling to R+JP Mullholland Butchers.
The Reserve Overall champion went to a very sweet 686kg British Blue cross from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Appleby selling to 436ppk and a total of £2990.96 to Messrs Nield, Sandback.
