PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 74 prime bulls forward at Borderways Bank Holiday Monday Sale. Trade would lift another gear this week for all classes forward. Selling just shy of the £4000 barrier was a 899kg Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith at £3937.62 others to £3394.80 for 828kgs from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle. Charolais sold to £3333.12 for a 16 month old 868kgs from Messrs Campbell, Thrunton Farm, Alnwick. Top price per kilo of 438kgs went to the same top overall priced bull from Clifton Moor. Next best came from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria with 735kgs, slling to 436pph. Messrs Jenkinson also sold 755kgs to 432p. Dairy bred bulls lacked in weight overall hence why a top of £2131.36 for a 616kg Holstein Friesian from Glenapp Estate, Ballantrae, Girvan. Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlislesold 598kgs to £2081.05. Top pence per kilo of 350p & 348p both came from Street Head for 568kgs & 598kg. Glenapp Estate Closely followed at 346p for 616kgs.

PRIME CATTLE: Bank Holiday didn’t disappoint on the number or trade front with 63 prime steers and heifers forward. All classes met a very firm trade and unlike the deadweight system the live ring drives onwards and upwards. Ten sold over £3000 with a days top of £3368.70 for 855kg Limousin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle. The same home also sold to £3359.94 going for a 857kg Limousin cross heifer they were purchased by Messrs Nield, Sandbach and Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold the next best at £2888 for 722kgs top pence per kilo heifer also went to Messrs Dent with 567kgs selling to 412ppk. Messrs story also sold 821kgs to £3185.48 and Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold 745kgs to £3129 to A & D Meats. Messrs Nicholson who sold the top priced British Blue cross to £3028.68 for 746kgs and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo overall came from the 745kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake which sold to 420ppk.
