Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 7th June Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.  

PRIME BULLS: Once again numbers remain tight in the Prime bull section resulting undoubtably in a fantastic trade received throughout the sale.  Top overall was achieved by returning customers Messrs J Watson, Bowsden Moor Farm, Berwick Upon Tweed who peaked at £2040.91 for a Limousin and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith peaked at £1935.83 for his run of four Limousin bulls which averaged 716kg £1751.92.  More quality from Messrs Connell, Wanton Walls, Launder selling their two entries to £1879.38 and £1843.30 purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butcher and Bowland Foods respectively.  Charolais bulls from Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor Farm, were seen to peak at £1849.10 and £1778.63 with their consignment of 3 bulls averaging a healthy £1889.55.  Simmentals saw a day’s top of £1807.30 from Messrs Houldey, Kirkleton House, Lockerbie purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  A Maine Anjou bull from Messrs Bell, Winterhope Farm, Lockerbie sold to £1723.19 and was purchased by Messrs Helliwell, Rochdale.  Native bred cattle from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt Farm, Hexham sold to £1548.18 and £1501.03 both for Aberdeen Angus crosses.  Top overall pence per kilo of 252.5 was paid to Messrs A J Ewing, Dunbretton Farm, Annan and purchased by Ralph Pearson.

Dairy bred bulls were exceptionally easily sold with an easy 10 pence lift on the week seeing a day’s overall top of £1356.89 for a Fleckvieh from Messrs Mitchinson, Beckhouse, Carlisle.  Holstein Friesians from Messrs J J Taylor, East Park, Carlisle to £1342.92 and £1329.95 with all of the above purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Top pence per kilo of 218.5p was paid to Beck House for their Fleckvieh, 213.5 for East Parks, Holstein Friesians and Friesian to 200.00 from Messrs Reed, Croft House, Carlisle.  Many more bulls are desperately required on a weekly basis

PRIME CATTLE: Trade rises as numbers tighten once more, with many more cattle could have been easily sold. Top overall was a 788kg British Blue cross steer from Messrs J Dixon & Sons, Lesson Hall, Wigton, achieving the day’s top of £1903.02. Messrs Dixon also sold the top Limousin cross steer to £1816.34. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold a further two to £1811.79 and £1811.57, and averaged £1764.04 for the consignment of three sold.

Top pence per kilo steer was an outstanding 664kg Limosuin cross from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan receiving 256.5ppk and was purchased by WE Fairlie Ltd, Letham. Others to 248.56 twice, firstly from Messrs JE Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle, purchased by Bowland Foods and secondly by Messrs Nicholson, The Lake purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

Heifers proved popular with the day’s top of 707kg, £1742.76 being achieved for a Limosuin cross heifer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith, purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Blake sold others to £1730.60 for 680kg and £1676.33 for 721kg both going to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. This run averaged an outstanding £1716.50 for 3 Limousin cross heifers. Top overall pence per kilo of the day came from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk with a homebred 558kg Limousin heifer achieving 276.5ppk. Others from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle sold to 262.5ppk on two occasions, with all of the above being purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin. Blonde crosses from Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, Bishop Aukland sold to 259.5ppk purchased by Geoff Nutter.

CAST COWS: A large show of 395 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were on offer on Monday.

A larger entry of 289 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to a large ring side of buyers which ensured all classes being well up on the week, with 16 cows selling for over 200ppk. Messrs Armstrong, High Tarns Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 893kg, 207.5ppk or £1852 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold a Limousin cow for 841kg, 219.5ppk or £1846 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm sold a Charolais cow for 838kg, 214.5ppk or £1797 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Watson & Co, Bowsden Moor Farm run of cows topped at 801kg, 221.5ppk or £1774 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold a Limousin cow for 776kg, 223.5ppk or £1734 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ritchie, Croftheads sold two Limosuin cows for 844kg, 189.5ppk or £1599 and to 862kg, 175.5ppk or £1512 purchased by Owain Llyr and Mr Kirkpatrick. Mr Andrew Ewing, Dumbretton Farm run of Limosuin cows topped at 604kg, 202.5ppk or £1223 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Bell, New House Farm sola Charolais cross heifer for 642kg, 201.5ppk or £1293 to Mr Kirkpatrick.

All classes of dairy caste cows were in great demand, with Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall selling a Holstein cross heifer for 823kg, 168.5ppk or £1386 to Les Fell. Messrs Marshall, Hardgrave Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 884kg, 144.5ppk or £1277 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Haston & son, Swordwellrigg sold a Montbeliarde cross heifer for 649kg, 193.5ppk or £1255 to Capper Farming. Messrs Baxter, Park House sold a Holstein cross cow for 863kg, 139.5ppk or £1203 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Vevers, High Plain, sold a Holstein cross cow for 836kg, 142.5ppk or £1191 to Les Fell. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 865kg, 137.5ppk or £1189 to Les Fell. Messrs Harrison, Hazel Head sold a Holstein cross cow for 852kg, 139.5ppk or £1188 to Sean McGimpsey. CAST BULLS: Eight stock bulls were on offer, with Greentownwers Farms selling the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1308kg, 154.5ppk or £2020 to Owain Llyr. Johnstone Rae, Boghead Farm sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1172kg, 154.5ppk or £1810 to Pickstocks. Messrs McLaren, Cairnie Farm sold a 56 month old Limousin bullock for 1010kg, 160.5ppk or £1621 to Les Fell, and a 45 month old Simmental cross bullock from Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite Lane sold a British Friesian stock bull for 1155kg, 127.5ppk or £1472 to Mr Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP: Forward were 1685 prime lambs and 161 cast sheep at the weekly sale. A great show of lambs with numbers eclipsing last year despite the lack of a spring seeing lambs harder to draw. An overall average of 337pph was achieved, SQQ 339p, does reflect on a shortage of top and export sheep, nevertheless 51 pens of lambs sold over £160 with 20 pens seeing north of 400ppk, a sale average of £139.98 per head. Seymour Farms, Wigton, topped the days trading at £215 and 467.4pph for a truly amazing Beltex cross lamb which sold to Mr R Skelton for a new butcher client. Closely following at 456.4p was another fabulous Beltex from regular customers Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall who averaged 399ppk for their run. Messrs Johnston, Springfield, Carlisle saw lambs to £188 and 447.6p

CAST SHEEP:  An entry of 180 cast ewes were forward and trade throughout was flying and a sale average of £112 prevailed.

Topping the sale at £150 was a black Beltex ewe from Freddie Little, The Guards. Strong ewes were selling easily in excess of £150 with Mules selling to a strong trade topping at £120 from Messrs McGregor, Dirrops. Charollais ewes sold to a leading price tag of £144. Many more could have been sold.
