On Wednesday the 24th September Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly store cattle sale. A similar entry of 523 Store cattle were forward, the best cattle to sell are the best quality and flesh with weathered hardened dairy types finding a good trade but harder to place than a fleshier better presented dairy bred. Today would see a lot less quality overall with a majority of the show dairy bred animals forward. Topping the sale was a 23 month old Limousin out of the Holstein Friesian from Messrs Story, Blackrigg, Longtown achieving £2660. Messrs Robinson, Bridge End Farm, Keswick sold a joint top priced Charolais at £2580. Messrs Story, Blackrigg matched this a further three times. Aberdeen Angus crosses sold to £2540 from Messrs Black, East Kildarroch, Newton Stewart and best British Blue cross came from Messrs Cullen, Crosshill, Carlisle at £2420.
Heifers were short on quality and size overall. A days top of £2480 went to a Limousin from Messrs Knight, Stepheney Farm, Seascale. British Blue crosses to £2440 from Messrs McKie, Lawrence Holme, Wigton. Aberdeen Angus from the same home sold to £2360 and Limousins from Messrs Story, Blackrigg, Longtown sold to £2380 for 22 months old.
Dairy bred steers lacked in size overall but still managed a good high of £1860 for an Ayrshire steer from Messrs Routledge, Brackenhill Rigg, Carlisle and three Friesians steers sold to £1800, one from Messrs Roddam, Fordlands, Carlisle and two from Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle. Heifers sold to £1790 for Holstein Friesian from Messrs Nelson, Redcroft Farm, Castle Douglas.
