On Wednesday the 8th October Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of store cattle. A nice entry of 486 store cattle forward saw all classes dearer on the week, cattle overall were forward with more flesh and vendors we well rewarded for this, it was a day for dairy breeds through with 56 black and white steers and heifers forward. Despite this, steers averaged £1973.79 and heifers £1847.72 with an overall average of £1912.22. Topping overall today was a Limousin steer for Messrs Magnay, Greenwrae, Gretna at £2600. Messrs Bowman, Croft House, Penrith sold next best at £2560 and £2540. Messrs Pigg & Baxter, Gaitsgill Hall sold one at £2540 also Best Charolais crosses were sold by Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank at £2480 and Beef Shorthorns from Messrs Magnay to £2440.
Heifers sold to a top of £2500 of Messrs Bowman, Croft House, Penrith for a Charolais cross. Messrs Lockhart, Fauldingcleuch, Lockerbie sold an outstanding run of cattle and topped also at £2500 for a Limousin cross. Best Charolais crosses came from Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank at £2410 and British Blues to £2320 from Messrs Middleton, Stone House, Wigton.
Dairy bred steers sold to £1960 for two Montbeliardes from Messrs Dart, Flothers, Hexham and Friesians to £1900 from Messrs Mason, Bank Farm, Penrith.
