ANNUAL SALE OF DRAFT EWES AND SHEARLINGS & RAMS

SATURDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2025

On Saturday, 11th October, the Annual sale of draft ewes, shearlings and rams was held in  Lazonby mart.  The highly noted sale was well supported once again with 1,000 breeding ewes forward.  A reminder that most of the sheep forward were 4 crop plus and those who did sell younger ewes were highly rewarded.

Before the sale the show took place with this year’s Judge Mr Matthew Foster undertaking proceedings.  After much deliberation the Championship was awarded to the first price pen of ewes from J T Green, The Hill which later sold for £260 a life.  The Reserve Champion pen went to the first prize pen of shearlings from Paul and Lenny Smith, Roachburn selling to £270.  The Green family brought a superb run of 95 ewes going on to average £182.84.  James Thompson, Howburn brought 54 and went on to average £178.70.  John Thirlwell, Quarry Farm, brought a flashy pen of 2 crop ewes going on to sell for £200. Older ewes once again a strong  trade with many 4/5 crop ewes selling £100 plus.

Breeding rams commenced with our Show and sale of Blue Faced Leicester sheep again judged by Matthew Foster.  After looking over the sheep the Championship was awarded to Adam Watson, Saunders Close for his First Prize shearling which later sold to the highest price of £1700 to Mr Chris Harrison, Coalith.  The Reserve Championship went to the first prize lamb from Chris Hodgson, Hill House West selling to £800. Females topped at £500 from John Reed, The Knarr for a flashy ewe lamb.

Other breeds were in hot demand with a new centre record being achieved with Paul Staley, Broadmea selling a Swaledale shearling to £1000 to Steven Brown, Bowhall.

Once again we thank you all for your continued support.
