Kirkby Stephen Annual 'Luke Fair' Sale of Cattle

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual ‘Luke Fair’ sale of store cattle on Monday.

The sale topped at £2815 on two separate occasions, firstly for a British Blue cross steer from Messrs Maughan, Ash Garth, Great Asby.

Messrs Pickles, Far Gearstones, Chapel le Dale also topped at £2815 for a Limousin cross heifer, with this home also selling Limousin cross heifers to £2775, £2655, £2615, £2575 and averaging £2687 for five sold.

Messrs Maughan, Ash Garth also sold British Blue cross steers to £2755, £2735, £2700 twice, £2675 twice, £2615, with Limousin cross steers making £2735, £2715, £2665 and £2605, with this annual consignment of 41 quality bred and fantastically turned out cattle averaging a tremendous £2374.63.

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside sold Limousin cross steers to £2705 and £2675.

Messrs Taylor, Waterhouses, Asby sold Limousin cross steers to £2655 and £2610 twice, with Limousin cross heifers selling to £2505.

Messrs Maughan, Woodfoot, Crosby Ravensworth sold Limousin cross steers to £2600.

Messrs Millar, Crookholme Farm, Canonbie sold British Blue cross steers and heifers to £2555.

Messrs Paul, Sawbridge Hall, Bleatarn sold Limousin cross heifers to £2500.

What was said to be one of the dearest trades ever seen for store cattle , with a steers average of £2203.18 (up £581.47) and a heifer average if £2102.64 (up £644.27), and a whopping overall average of £2155.69 (up £608.28 on the year!)
