Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual prize show and sale of Suckled Calves when a catalogued entry of 475 calves were on offer.
Topping the sale at £4500 was a seven month old Limousin heifer from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby which was purchased by Messrs Slack & Haughan, Plumtree House, Penrith.
This home also sold another ten month old Limousin heifer to make £3750 selling to Messrs Amos, West View, Leicester.
Our judge Liam Rodney, Ripon awarded the overall championship to the Brown Family for their eleven month old Limousin steer which went on to sell for £3400 to the judge. This same home also took the reserve championship with a seven month old British Blue heifer which sold for £2400 to Messrs Amos.
This same home also sold a seven month old Limousin heifer to make £2700 selling to Messrs Millar, Canonbie, with a eleven month old Limousin steer making £2600 selling to Messrs Amos.
With this home also selling six month old Limousin Steers to £2350 selling to Messrs Mellin, Long Preston.
The tremendous consignment of forty-five British Blue and Limousin Bullocks and heifers sold to average a phenomenal £2035.67 for an average age of seven months old.
Messrs Beveridge, Low West House Farm, Bishop Auckland on their first time selling suckled calves here at Kirkby Stephen sold a nine month old British blue heifer to £2880 selling to Messrs McAlister, Wester Thomason, Bonnybridge.
This home also sold a pair of nine month old Limousin heifers to make £2425 selling to Messrs Ridley, Shitlington Hall, Hexham, with another nine month old Limousin heifer selling to £2400 selling to Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egremont and also selling a nine month old Limousin steer to make £2400 selling to Messrs Moralee, Durham, with another nine month old Limousin bullock making £2340 selling to Messrs Maughan, Great Asby. This consignment of seventeen four to nine month old Limousin and British Blue steers and heifers sold to average £2053.24
Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange, Great Asby sold a seven month old Limousin heifer to make £2700 selling to Messrs Grainger, Kiln Close, Wigton.
This home also sold a seven month old British Blue bullock to make £2415 selling to Messrs Snape, Worcestershire, with another seven month old British Blue steer selling to £2350 also selling to Messrs Snape, with a seven month old British blue heifer selling to £2315 selling to Messrs Grainger and a thirteen month old Limousin cross steer making £2305 to Messrs Townley, Nutta Farm, Clapham.
This consignment of 37 Limousin and British Blue bullocks and heifers averaging seven month old sold to an average of £1986.76.
Messrs Taylor, Waterhouses, Asby a seven month old Limousin heifer to make £2555 selling to Messrs Ewing, Annan, with this home also selling a eleven month old Limousin steer to make £2500 to Messrs Townley, Clapham.
Messrs Marston, Easegill Head, Wharton sold a twelve month old British blue cross bullock to make £2480 selling to Messrs Smith, Carnforth, with this home also selling another twelve month old British Blue bullock to £2400 selling to Messrs Moralee, Durham.
Messrs Peile, Greystoke Castle, Penrith sold two six month old Limousin cross heifer to make £2400 and £2380 both selling to Messrs Snape, Worcestershire.
Messrs Swinbank, Brow Farm sold ten month old British blue cross heifer to make £2345 selling to Messrs Grainger.
Messrs Bell, Haas Side Farm, Lockerbie sold two seven month old Limousin cross heifers to make £2315 selling to Messrs Bradley, Settle and Messrs Grainger, Wigton. With this home also selling eight month old Limousin heifer to £2300 selling to Messrs Coulthard, Bishop Auckland.
Messrs Wood, Crosby Lodge, Crosby Ravensworth sold a pair of seven month old Charolais steers to make £2000 selling to Messrs Moralee, Durham. With a seven month old Charolais cross heifer selling for £1900 to Messrs Dent, Elm House.
Bulls topped at £2300 for an eight month old Blue cross Limousin from Messrs Pedley, Oaktree Farm, Barbon selling to Rodney Brother, Ripon.
“A sale like no other before” was used to describe the suckled calf sale here at Kirkby Stephen with a steer average of £1902.37 (up £644.79 on the year) and a heifer average of £1863.59 (£641.71 up on the year) with an overall sale average for bullocks and heifers of £1885.10 at an average age of seven month old.
Plenty young smart well bred bullocks and heifers regularly sold between £2000 and £2300 at six to eight month old. Well over fifty active buyers were in attendance from Worcestershire to Stirlingshire and from coast to coast with the quality and number of calves here at Kirkby Stephen drawing such a wide range of buyers with many others leaving empty handed and many more calves could have been easily sold to great advantage.
