Kirkby Stephen Beef Breeding Show & Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen mart held their annual show and sale of beef breeding cattle when an entry of 332 head were on offer.

Topping the sale at £6400 was a the days champion outfit, a second calver Limousin cow with a Limousin heifer calf at foot from Messrs McAlister, Wester Thomaston, Stirlingshire and was purchased by Messrs Walton, Bowes Close Farm, Barnard Castle.

The pre sale judging was carried out by Craig Robertson, Pitlochry.

Messrs Maughan, New Hall Farm, Hamsterley sold a Limousin heifer with bull calf at foot to make £6050 selling to Messrs Dobson, White Kirkley Farm, Bishop Auckland.

This home sold another Limousin cow with bull calf at foot sold to £5200 also selling to Messrs Dobson with another Limousin heifer with a heifer calf at foot selling to £5100 to Messrs Holroyd, Hebden Bridge.

Messrs Preece, Thornbush, Roeburndale sold a Limousin heifer with a heifer calf at foot to make £5100 selling to Messrs Harrison, High Beck Head, Barnard Castle.

Messrs Swift, Dry Howe, Kendal sold a third calved cow with Limousin heifer calf at foot to make £5000 and was purchased by Messrs Allinson, West Briscoe, Baldersdale.

Messrs Cowan, The Ash, Roadhead sold a Limousin heifer with heifer calf at foot to make £5000 selling to Messrs Crocker, Town End Farm, Penrith.

Messrs Brannen, Scar Top, Temple Sowerby sold a Limousin heifer with a steer calf at foot selling to £5000 and was purchased by Messrs Robertson, Pitlochry.

Incalf heifers topped at £5000 on three separate occasions, firstly for a British Blue from Messrs Bradley, Penny Grange selling to Shennanton Livestock, Kirkcowan with another British Blue from this home being purchased by Messrs Walker, Brennand Farm, Dunsop Bridge, Messrs Maughan, New Hall Farm, Hamsterley sold a Limousin heifer to Miss R Dobson, White Kirkley Farm, Frosterley.

Messrs Bradley also sold a British Blue incalf heifer to £4600 selling to Messrs Pickering, Whitby; with another British blue selling to £4500 purchased by Messrs Brass, Soulby and a Limousin to £4500 purchased by Macarthur Brothers, Nairn.

This annual consignment from Penny Grange sold to average a whopping £4100.21

Messrs Maughan, New Hall sold a British Blue incalf heifer to £4500 also purchased by Macarthur Brothers.

Trade was flying for all classes with heifers and calves averaging £4023.61 which was up £1048.27 on the year for fifteen more sold, 26 cows and calves averaged £3692 which was up £1311.37 for ten more sold on the year. 127 incalf heifers sold to average £3510.78 which was up £701.02 for 17 more sold on the year.

A fantastic trade was witnessed for all classes of beef breeding cattle with a packed ringside of buyers being attracted by the quality and quantity of breeding cattle on offer at the largest sale in the country here at Kirkby Stephen.
