Prime Bulls & Cattle

PRIME BULLS: A much smaller and plainer show of 70 Prime bulls on offer.  Trade would see very little difference in the week.  Topping the sale overall would be one of the heavier bulls of the day at 874kg Limousin from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton achieving £3845.60.  Messrs Stamper, Harrot Hill, Cockermouth sold another superb Limousin bull to £3659.70 for 828kgs.  Best Simmental came to £3229.16 for 902kg from Messrs Potts, Chapel House, Brampton and best Aberdeen Angus was an 836kgs from Messrs McCormick, Boreland Farm, Newton Stewart receiving £3076.48.  Top overall pence per kilo of 442 went to Paul Stampers 828kg Limousin mentioned above with next best 440  from Craig Ridleys overall top priced animal. 

Dairy bred bulls were short of numbers overall and sold very well.  Top overall went to a Holstein from Messrs Dixon, Smallthwaite Farms, Penrith at £2617.44 for 798kgs.  Next best was a Friesian weighing 792kgs from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie. Top overall went to a Montbeliarde from Seymour Farms, Wigton at 340ppk for 599kgs.  Next best was a 737kg Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton at 336 pence per kilo.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another outstanding entry of 78 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly Primestock sale.

Quality overall would be a lot less as very best quality were hard to come by this week but despite this all classes were very good and similar to sell.   Best quality types would see a considerable rise on the week. Top overall at £3243.70 was a Charolais cross steer at 22 months old weighing 815kgs from first time vendors Messrs Wilson, Cassindilly Farm, Fife.

Next best was an Aberdeen Angus again from more first time vendors Messrs Shaw, Dryfeholm, Lockerbie selling 921kgs to £3241.92.  British Blues to £3240.90 from Messrs Murray, Prior House, Carlisle for 831kgs and best Limousins sold to £3126.88 or 734kg from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton.  Top pence per kilo steer came from Messrs Wilson, Cassindilly, at 426ppk for a 726kg British Blue cross selling to A & D Meats and matching at 426 was Arkleby Hall, Wigton with 734kg Limousin cross.

Heifers sold to a grand total of £3173.70 for a 745kg Limousin cross from Messrs Miller Woodhousehill, Lockerbie selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Charolais to £3025 for 764kgs from Messrs Wilson, Cassindilly and another to £3021.52 for 716kgs from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries, the second best Limousin also came from Messrs Neill and sold £2998.38 for 726kgs.  Top overall pence per kilo of the day went to a 617kg Limousin cross at 20 months old from George Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna achieving 435ppk.  Next best also from George a 551kg Limousin cross to 434 selling to R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle and also in the 430’s club was  a 666kg Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith selling to 432ppk.
