Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night when 2,558 sheep were forward consisting of 1,607 spring lambs, 231 prime hoggs and 720 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £192 was a 58kg Texel cross lamb from Messrs Lyle, Staingills, Penrith which was bought by A Atkinson.

Topping at 452.5p/kg were a pair of 40kg Beltex cross lambs which sold for £181 from Messrs Allison, Windygate, Winton.

Messrs Lyle, Staingills sold a pair of 42kg Beltex cross lambs to make £186 with another pen of three 41kg Beltex crosses making £185 (451.2p/kg).

Suffolk cross lambs sold to £181 for a pen of three 53kg lambs from Upperlands Farm, bought by A. Atkinson, another pen of 45kg Suffolk cross lambs making £168.50 (374.4p/kg) from Messrs Richardson, Etherley House, Darlington.

Another pen of sixteen 40kg Beltex cross lambs selling for £175 (437.5p/kg) also from Upperlands Farm.

42 pens and 158 lambs sold between £160-£192

20 pens and 122 lambs sold between 4.00-4.52p/kg

Heavy lambs were in extreme demand and were fiercely bid for.

49kg Texel cross lambs sold to £185 and 47kg Texel cross to £184 from Staingills.

Messrs Wilson, Wood Farm, Thursby sold a pen of seventeen Suffolk cross lambs weighing 46kg to make £165.50.

Another very strong overall sale average of 335.09p/kg and £134.85 per head was achieved.

Cast sheep topped at £212.50 for a pair of Texel cross ewes from Messrs Watson, Barnard Castle.

Mule ewes topped at £130.50 for a pen from Messrs Lyle, Staingills.

Swaledale ewes topped at £112.50 from Messrs Tiplady, Red House Farm, Barnard Castle with strong pen of Swaledale ewes regularly selling between £100-£112.

Plenty of pens of strong well bred continental cross ewes regularly sold between £190-£212.

Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm sold a pen of fourteen Texel cross Beltex ewes to make £177.50 with another pen of twenty two ewes the same way bred selling for £176.50 also from this home. The consignment of 37 ewes from Whiteley Hey Farm sold to average £173.46.

Pens of strong Mule ewes regularly sold between £125-£130.

Cheviot cross ewes sold to £150 from Castle Hill Estates, Soulby.

456 Texel cross ewes sold to average £140.36.

An overall ewe sale average of £124.78 was achieved.
