Christmas Prime Cattle and Bulls

PRIME CATTLE: An outstanding show and entry of 107 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale.  This week also incorporated the Christmas Pre Sale Show which was ably kindly judged by Harry Wood of Bowland Foods, Preston and Sponsored by The Scottish Farmer, Trust Ford and Robinson & Mitchell.

In the pre sale show Harry awarded overall Champion animal and the 1^st prized Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton.  This heifer weighed 652kg and later sold for 590ppk to local butcher Steven Wilson, Butcher Shops at Corby Hill and Brampton.  The Reserve Overall Champion  was awarded to Messrs Grainger, Kiln Close, Wigton with a handy 500kg British Blue cross and later sold for 500ppk to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Outwith the prize winning heifers Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold a marvellous 661kg Red Limousin cross to £3602.45 equating to 545ppk and purchased by local butcher R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Highest priced British Blue came from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont selling 676kgs to £3143.40 and purchased by West Cumbria Butchers, W Lindsay & Sons, 8 Station Street, Cockermouth.

Steers peaked at £3536 for 884kg Limousin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle purchased by Ed Neild;  Messrs McClelland, Knockshinnoch, Dumfries sold next best with 911kgs attaining £3534.68 to Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton sold 777kgs to £3341.10 to A & D Meats and Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold 772kgs to £3319.60 to Pioneer Foods Carlisle.  Charolais sold to £2889 for the 1^st Prize Charolais cross for 675kgs.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold top priced 1^st Prize British Blue at £2824.80 for 642kgs to Bowland Foods.  Natives sold to a top of £2828.20 for a 790kg Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont and Galloways to £2762.25 for 635kgs from Messrs Whitfield, Batey Shield, Haltwhistle.  Top pence per kilo steer went to the 1^st prized Young Farmers steers from Amy Vance, Bridgehouse Farm, Newton Stewart receiving 470ppk for 689kgs selling to Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller show of 70 Prime bulls forward saw some outstanding quality on offer at the top end and a good show overall, trade like last week saw the very best in hot demand and the rest achieving a very similar in trade to that of last week.  Topping the bulls overall at £4389 was a 1050kg 24 month old Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Bankdale Farm, Carlisle selling to Ed Neild.  Bankdale also sold the next best with 974kg for 20 months to £4285.60 to Bowland Foods, Preston.  Best British Blue was a 21 month 866kgs from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton receiving £4260.72.  Next best Blue was £3966.45 for a 22 month old 853kgs from Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres, Lanark.  A 35 month old Limousin from Messrs Briggs, Southerfield Hall, Wigton sold to £3905.28 for 1017kgs.  Top overall pence per kilo of 492 went to Osborne Farm, Wigton for their British Blue bull for 866kgs.  Next best was joined at 465ppk for 853kgs Blue for Stonebyres and secondly by Bankdale Farms, 821kgs Limousin.

Not many black and whites forward saw a days top of £2468.18 for an 863kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs McCamley, Knockshiffnock Farm, Ayrshire and £2324.58 for 901kgs to Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 346 went to a 599kgs Holstein Friesian from Messrs Dixon, Hedley East, Hexham selling to Bowland Foods,
