Prime Cattle and Bulls

PRIME CATTLE: A much smaller show of only 58 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale. Quality was expectedly a lot less on the week and despite a lesser trade expected this did not come to fruition with a very good trade achieved throughout the sale. Topping the sale overall was a 791kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton receiving £3116.54 selling to Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Miller sold next best as well with 785kgs, achieving £3092.90. Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham sold there first ever over the £3000 mark to a sweet £3051.96 for 877kgs. Charolais crossed to £2975.40 for 880kgs from Messrs Ferguson, East Side, Thornhill, top pence per kilo of 408ppk went to a 713kg Charollais cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle selling to Ed Nield. Next best of 406ppk also sold by The Lake with 728kg Limousin to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Heifers lacked the most quality throughout and were seen to a peak of £2677.84 for a 31 month old 716kg British Blue cross from Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, Alston. Messrs Bland, The Flatt. Brampton sold next best with 671kgs receiving £2603.48 and purchased by Pioneer Foods Carlisle.

PRIME BULLS: A great entry of 101 prime bulls forward at Borderways weekly primestock sale. Trade would see an easing overall on the week and bizarrely more of a slip on all the best quality bulls, well fleshed, plainer bulls would see very little difference. Top overall was a 894kg British Blue at 23months old from Messrs Saunders, Maidenlands, Ulverston selling to £3915.72. Next best was a 863kg, 19 month old Limousin from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Lanarkshire achieving £3797.20. Simmentals to £3304.50 for 1124kgs from Maidenlands, Ulverston. All Hereford crosses to £2908.32 for 876kgs from Messrs Ferguson, Eastside, Thornhill. Top overall pence per kilo of 440ppk went to Messrs Nimmo’s 863kg Limousin with next best going to Messrs Saunders 894kg British Blue at 438ppk. Dairy bred bulls sold to £2531.16 for 801kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie and £2493.2 for 742kgs from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle for another. Fleckvieh to £2240.60 for 659kgs from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle this was also joint top pence per kilo of 340 along with Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle selling a Holstein Friesian.
