Kirkby Stephen Christmas Prime Sheep Show & Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart Held Their Weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday Evening when 3091 sheep where forward consisting of 2356 Prime Lambs and 735 Cast Sheep.

Topping the sale at £1120 was the overall champion pair of lambs in our Christmas Show, which where the first placed heavy weight Beltex’s at 54kg which went on to sell for a market record of £1120 and (2074.1p/kg) which where consigned by Messrs Askwith, Middle Mown Meadows. With these lambs being purchased by weekly market supporter Mr Alam for Lancashire Direct Halal Meat, Blackburn.

Messrs Askwith also took the reserve Championship with the first placed pair of heavy weight Texel cross lambs at 56kg which sold for £380 (678.6p/kg) and which where also successfully purchased by Lancashire Direct Halal Meats.
A fantastic turnout of over 40 pairs of lambs where out to show being one of the best seen here at Kirkby Stephen, which where a credit to everyone who turned such quality lambs out to show.

Continental Show Lambs sold to average a wonderful 530p, £246.83 and 46.57kg.

Out with the show lambs the sale topped at £230 for a pair of 74kg Suffolk cross lambs from Messrs Askwith, Middle Mown Meadows, Crook.

Topping at 584.2p/kg where a pair of 38kg Texel cross lambs which made £222 from Messrs Foster, Fordham Farm, York. This home also sold a pen of sixteen 39kg lambs to make £215 (551p/kg), and a pen of ten 42kg at £212 (504.8p/kg).

JoJo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York sold a pen of five 41kg Beltex cross lambs to make £228 (556p/kg) with this home also selling a pen of nineteen 42kg at £206 with 58kg Texel cross lambs making £199.50 (344p/kg) a pen of six 63kg at £199.50, a pen of 69kg Suffolk cross lambs making £198, and a pen of five 39kg Blue Texel cross lambs making £198 507.7p/kg from this home. 

Orlena Henderson, Winchester Lodge, Northside sold a pair of 38kg Rouge cross lambs to make £218 (573.7p/kg).

Messrs Eddleston, Great Harwood sold a pair of 42kg at £218, with this home also selling a pen of nine 39kg at £213.50 (547p/kg).

Messrs Simpson, Highscale Farm, Wigglesworth sold a pen of eleven 42kg lambs at £215 (511.9p/kg) with another pen of nine 40kg making £213 (532.5p/kg) six 41kg at £204, a pen of twelve 37kg at £197 (532.4p/kg) and a pen of 39kg at £202 (517.9p/kg).

Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield sold a pair of 42kg Texel cross lambs to make £225 (535.7p/kg), a pair of 38kg making £210 (553p/kg) with another pair of 41kg making £210 (512.2p/kg), a pair of 39kg at £203 (521p/kg) and a pen of eleven 40kg at £200.50 (501p/kg).

Kirkby Stephen bucked the national trend in the prime sheep trade once again with an eye watering SQQ of 364.7p/kg and an overall sale average of 334p/kg and £150.54 being achieved for 2356 lambs which includes over 700 Mule and Horned Lambs.

Cast Sheep topped at £320 for the first placed pen of five Beltex cross ewes from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside and where purchased by Yorkshire Halal Meat.
Our Judge Mr G Slack, Stoneriggs awarded the second prize pen of five lowland ewes to a pen of Beltex cross ewes from Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm which went on to sell for £300 also to Yorkshire Halal Meat.

Texel ewes sold to £302 from Messrs Collin, Intake Farm, Barnard Castle.

Blue Texel cross ewes sold to £265 from Henry Jewitt, Gracies Farm, Barnard Castle.

Rough Fell ewes topped at £149 for a pen of four from Messrs Law, Crooksbeck, Ravenstonedale.

Swaledale ewes topped at £124 from Messrs Gowland, Woodbine House, Ireshopeburn.

Messrs Heron, Eastfield Farm, Warcop sold a pen of twelve Swaledale ewes to make £119.
