On Monday 14th June Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock. A smaller show of 358 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with 1502 prime sheep was on offer.
PRIME BULLS: Yet another very small entry of only 57 Prime bulls forward with a slight easing on best quality continental bulls and an increase on all best Friesian bred bulls. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie achieving £1926.93 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Blondes to £1627.31 from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop, Penrith purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Top overall pence per kilo of 236.5p for a Limousin cross from Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Blondes to 235.5p from Grassknop and Charolais crosses to 234.5p from Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan. Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1526.47 for a Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick; this was also top price per kilo at 198.5p, along with Messrs McDowall & Co, also selling to this price. Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton sold his best to 196p purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. More bulls will be required for next weeks sale.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger entry of 62 Prime steers and heifers forward at the weekly sale whereby all classes would see a slight easing on trade on the week. Top overall was an outstanding Limousin cross steer from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton attaining £1883.70 and another to £1770.18 both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie also selling to £1724.25 for another Limousin cross. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle to £1622.74 and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Top pence per kilo steer was one of the aforementioned Limousin crosses from Lesson Hall selling to 244.5ppk. Heifers were seen to peak at £1579.34 for another Limousin cross from Messrs Pearson, High Plasketlands Farm, Maryport purchased by Black Brow Abattoir, Wigton. Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle sold his top to £1528.40 and purchased by Steven Wilson, Butcher, Corby Hill. British Blues to £1445 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle and again purchased by Steven Wilson.
Top overall pence per kilo of 249.5p was achieved on four occasions, twice by Newbiggin, and were purchased by Black Brow Abattoir and twice by High Plasketlands Farm, purchased by A & D Meats as well as Black Brow Abattoir. Please advise entries for next weeks sale.

CAST COWS: A great show of 250 cast cows and stock bull was on offer to an increased number of buyers ensuring all classes were in great demand with 13 cows selling for 200ppk or more.
DA Harrison & Co, Hill House run of cows sold to average 780kg, 205.8p, £1605 and topped at 827kg, 209.5p, £1732 and 732kg, 209.5p, £1533 for Limousin cross cows and a British Blue cross cow topped at 788kg, 218.5p, £1721 bought by Sean McGimpsey, Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hunter, Bridge Mill sold the top priced Charolais cow for 703kg, 216.5p, £1522 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Wilson, Low Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 786kg, 192.5p, £1513 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head sold the top priced Simmental cow for 807kg, 184.5p, £1488 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wilson, Belzies sold a Limousin cross cow for 884kg, 167.5p, £1480 to Steve Bowes. Mrs Janet Bell, Fitz sold a Limousin cross cow for 789kg, 187.5p, £1479 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Smith, Gallhills sold a Limousin cross heifer for 677kg, 217.5p, £1472 to Sean McGimpsey. All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand, Mrs Robinson, Burtholme sold a Holstein cross cow for 829kg, 177.5p, £1471 and 855kg, 147.5p, £1261 to David Holmes and Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Riley, Underhelm sold a Holstein cross cow for 764kg, 173.5p, £132 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Irving, Meinbank sold a Holstein cross cow for 742kg, 164.5, £1220 to Messrs Wylie. Messrs Naylor, Hill Green sold a Holstein cross cow for 882kg, 137.5p, £1212 to Les Fell. Messrs Clark, Whins sold the top priced Friesian cow for 175.5p to Les Fell. Messrs Graves, Elephant sold a Holstein cross heifer for 175.5p to Les Fell. Messrs Mawson, Bailey Ground sold a Holstein cross heifer for 172.5p to Messrs Wylie and Bowe Dairy Farming sold a Holstein cross heifer for 164.5p also to Messrs Wylie.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 14th June 2021 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime lambs, a smaller entry of 1372 head were forward this week, although trade dropped on the week Borderway were still way ahead other same day outlets with an overall average of £131.76 per head being achieved, this equates to 313ppk. 22 pens of lambs sold over 300p to 447.4p for 38kg Beltex; 37 pens sold in excess of £150 to a top of £200 for 48kg Beltex.
Seymour Farms, Leegate, Wigton claimed both the top price per kilo and per head to £200 for 48kg Beltex and 447.4p for 38kg Beltex reaching £170 per head, with their run of 20, 41kg lambs selling to average £160.15. Peter Urwin, Hill House, Kirklinton sold a run of Dutch Texel lambs to average 39.9kg, £160.46, 401.93ppk to £168 for 40.5kgs. Mr D Watters, Mill House, Wigton sold a run of 49kg Texel lambs to average £161 a head.
A run of 60 Suffolk X Mule lambs from R & A Slack, Cockley Bank, Carlisle caught the eye selling to £156 for a pen of 20, 49kg lambs to level at £145 per head (311.83ppk).
