Borderway Prime Bulls and Cattle

PRIME BULLS: A fantastic entry of 110 Prime bulls forward at Borderways weekly sale.  There were no let ups in the trade with all classes a rip-roaring trade.  Sixteen bulls sold over £3000 to a days overall top of £3828 for a 19 month old 870kg Limousin from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Lanarkshire.  The same home also sold 860kgs to £3801.20.  Simmentals to £3738.90 for a 1133kg 21month old from Messrs Marshall, Starlaws Farm, West Lothian.  Messrs Dick, Mains of Throsk, Stirling sold a 33 month old 1060kg Limousin to £3710.  Messrs Mitchell, Newton of Wiston, Biggar sold highest priced Aberdeen Angus at £3334.24 for 23 month old 916kgs.  Top overall pence per kilo of 456ppk went to a 742kg Limousin cross from DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton.  Next best came from another West Cumbrian, Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth at 446ppk for 732kgs.  Messrs Nimmo sold 860kgs to 442p and matching this was a 641kg Limousin cross from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle.

A very plain offering of Black and white dairy bulls forward seeing a days top of £2492.80 for a 760kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle and the top pence per kilo went to Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle with a 627kg Holstien Friesian at 358p.

PRIME CATTLE : A much larger show of 111 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly Primestock sale which saw trade up another gear once again with a full ring side of buyers plus some extras selling to 25 active accounts.  Thirty one cattle sold over £2800, twenty one over £2900 and a further fourteen selling over £3000 to a days top overall of £3245.76 for an 882 kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Craik, Waterside Farm, Castle Douglas who had an outstanding days trading with their 8 steers and heifers averaging a healthy £3039.23 for 736kg Limousin crosses.  Next best came from local farmers, Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle with a 753kg Limousin cross to £3222.84 following closely at £3205.80 was an 822kg Limousin cross from West Cumbrians, Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton, best British Blue came from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Southwaite with 749kgs selling to £3175.70.  Next in line came from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton with 727kgs selling to £3046.13.  Top priced Charolais came from Dairy farmers and first time vendors to the Primestock ring Messrs Fisher, Cruggleton, Newton Stewart selling 825kg to £2986.50. Top price per kilo steer was Messrs Story, Newbiggin’s 753kg Limousin cross at 428ppk followed by Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hills 749kg British Blue cross at 424p.

Heifers sold tremendously well with the top overall going to a 34 month old 777kg Charolais cross from Messrs Cooper, Govals Farm, Forfar, this heifers sold to £3061.38.  Limousins from Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas.  The next best at £3025.84 for 694kgs selling to Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill and Brampton.  British Blues from Gavin Scott, Gateside, Linlithgow sold to £3006.16 for 709kgs.  The highest priced Charolais under 30 month old came from Messrs Niell, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries with 696kg selling to £2992.80 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Top overall pence per kilo of the day was an exceptional 630kg Limousin from Messrs Story, Newbiggin receiving 450ppk selling to Whittakers Butchers, Accrington.  Next best was 444ppk for a 590kg Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton selling to Steven Wilson butchers.
