Borderway Primestock Sale

On Monday 21st June Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.  A good entry of 375 Cast cows, Bulls and Prime cattle and 2417 prime sheep were on offer today at Carlisle.

PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 82 prime bulls forward and sold sharper on the week with a good trade achieved throughout.  Topping the trade at £2099.92 was a Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold another to £1950.73 purchased by A & D Meats; the same vendors also sold top price British Blue cross to £1822.74.  Charolais crosses from DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton sold to £1680.21 purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford and Aberdeen Angus bulls to £1678.85 from Messrs Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle.  Top pence per kilo was a superb Limousin cross from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk attaining 248.5ppk purchased by A & D Meats.

Dairy bred bulls sold to £1170 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Soulsby, Williamsgill, Penrith and to a top pence per kilo of 186.5ppk for a Friesian from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Please advise entries by call or text to the auctioneer Grant Anderson 07872 129274.

PRIME CATTLE: Another good entry of 48 prime steers and heifers forward at the weekly sale of primestock at Borderway whereby a marvellous trade was achieved throughout once again seeing a days top of £1789.07 for a British Blue cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Hird, Town Head, Wigton sold another to £1719.53 and was purchased by WE Fairlie, Letham.  Limousin crosses from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold to £1745.37 and £1724.09 and Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport to £1736.25 for another; all purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Lords Close had the top pence per kilo of 241.5p for the aforementioned steer.

A poorer offering of heifers evident but managed a days top of £1558.84 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith bought by Pioneer Foods, another from Messrs Story, Newbiggin sold to £1515 and was purchased by Maurice Wharton of Black Brow Abattoir and Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle to £1511.79.  Top pence per kilo of 246.5ppk was attained by Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle purchased by Black Brow Abattoir, Wigton.  More are required on a weekly basis, please advise entries to auctioneer, Grant Anderson 07872 129274.

CAST COWS: A good entry of 243 Cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to a keen ring side of buyers which ensured a sharper trade for all classes.   Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close sold the top priced British Blue cross cow weighing 886kg, 201.5p, £1785 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Duerden, Killarwick Grange sold an outstanding Parthenais cow for 864kg, 203.5p totalling £1758 again to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House sold a Maine Anjou cow for 946kg, 179.5, £1698 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  The top priced Simmental cow was consigned by Messrs McColm, Crailloch at 895kg, 166.5p, £1490 once again sold Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Bell, High Dyke Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 783kg, 189.5p, £1482 to Michael Helliwell.  Messrs Taylor, Waterhouse sold two outstanding British Blue cross cows for 680kg, 211.5p, £1438 and 651kg, 205.5p, £1337 both purchased by Owain Llyr.  Messrs Thompson, East Unthank sold a Limousin cross cow for 653kg, 204.5p, £1335 to Owain Llyr.

All classes of Dairy cast cows were in great demand.  Messrs Teasdale & Son, Halefield sold outstanding Friesian Cows weighing 965kg, 157.5p, £1519 to Charles Kirkpatrick and 923kg, 133.5p, £1232 to Sean McGimpsey.  Two Montbelairde cows from Messrs Workman, Beeches for 829kg, 174.5p, £1446 and 855kg, 166.5p, £1423 both purchased by Les Fell.  Messrs Baird, Red Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 867kg, 145.5p, £1261 also to Les Fell.  Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton sold a Holstein cross cow for 800kg, 155.5p, £1244 to Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Bargh, Wood Close again a Holstein cow weighing 894kg, 134.5p, £1202 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

CAST BULLS: Only six stock bulls were on offer today.  Messrs Robinson, Pelutho park sold a Limousin Stock bull for 1149kg 173.5 £1993 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Harrison & Sons, Aikhead sold an outstanding Limousin stock bull for 1003 kg 173.5 £1740 also to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP : On Monday 21st June 2021 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep which saw an increased entry of 2417 head.  Lambs saw a fall in price this week, an overall average of 275p being achieved, this saw Borderway once more striding ahead of other centres selling today; this translates into £114.74 per head.  James Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont made his first trip of the season with a fantastic run of lambs, he lead the averages and also topped per head and per kilo seeing 2 single Texel cross lambs sell to £200 a head and another to £190, these being 476.2ppk, 452.4ppk and 444.4ppk all selling to Mr Robert Skelton, Dearham on behalf of a private butcher; Messrs Crichtons run of 14, 41kg lambs averaged £160.79, 392.16ppk.  Following closely at £195 for a great Beltex lamb was regular consignors WL Musgrave & Sons, Cardew Hall, Dalston, their 46kg lamb achieving 423.9ppk, selling once more to Mr R Skelton.
