Borderway Prime Cattle and Bulls

PRIME BULLS: A small entry of only 75 Prime bulls forward with trade a much better on the week, especially for well conformed and fleshed types.  Heavy bulls were outstanding to sell with two selling over £4000 and a days top of £4278.56 for a 968kg and £4049 for 912kgs from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick for Limousins.  Messrs Burns, Glenside Farm made their way down from Maybole in Ayrshire to sell their 834kg Limousin to a delight of £3669.40.  Best Native bull was an Aberdeen Angus from the Hexham Parish with Messrs Lishman, Fell Lane, Hexham selling 870kgs to £2740.50.  Top pence per Kilo of 448 went to Messrs Graham, Miller Hill Farm, Gilsland for a 736kg Limousin at 18 months old.  Three bulls sold to 444ppk with Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle selling a 785kg Limousin, Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning with 912kg and Messrs Graham, Millerhill with 814kg.  The 31 suckler and Dairy bred Limousins averaged a healthy 395.21ppk.

Dairy bulls topped at £2526.20 for a 743kg Holstein Friesian for Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie.  Montbeliardes to £2356.26 for 681kg from Seymour Farms, Wigton.  Danish Red to £2318.48 for 794kgs from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and finally 663kg Holstein from Messrs Dixon, Shire Lodge, Penrith receiving £2174.64.  Seymour Farms sold top two pence per kilo at 346 for 585kg and 681kg Montbeliardes.  Messrs Clark, Whins sold best Holsteins Friesian to 340 for 743kg and Shire Lodge sold highest priced Holstein at 328 for 663kgs.

PRIME CATTLE : A much smaller entry of only 44 Prime steers and heifers forward seeing a marginally sharper trade on the week for all classes.  Breaking the £3000 barrier something that’s becoming harder to do was Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont with a fantastic 740kg Limousin cross heifer selling to £3034 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Southwaite sold next best at £2817.81 for 717kg Limousin cross purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  A 30 month old 823kg Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton sold to £2732.36, top pence per kilo overall went to a 556kg Limousin cross from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna at 438ppk selling to Whittakers Butchers, Accrington.  Next best at 422p went to a 646kg Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill purchased by A & D Meats.

Steers saw a lot less weight about overall and were topped by a 723kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton at £2949.84 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Studholme, Nealhouses sold next best a 706kg Limousin cross to £2922.84 and Petteril Hill Farm sold next best at £2901.42 for a 729kg Limousin cross.  Best native was a 750kg Beef Shorthorn cross from Langhorn Farm, Egremont receiving £2715.  Top pence per kilo was a 646kg Limousin cross from Nealhouse farm selling to 420 ppk and also second best at 414 ppk for 706kg.
