Kirkby Stephen Prime Hogg Show & Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart Held Their Weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday Evening when 3,861 sheep where forward consisting of 3,244 Prime Hoggs and 617 Cast Sheep.

Topping the sale at £230 was a 66kg Beltex cross hogg from Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor Farm, Richmond.

Topping at 538.9p/kg where a pen of sixteen 36kg Beltex cross which sold for £194 from Messrs Simpson, Highscale Farm, Wigglesworth. This home also sold a pen of ten 38kg at £204.50 (538.2p/kg) a pen of ten 39kg at £201 (515.4p/kg) a pen of thirteen 37kg at £193 (521.6p/kg) and twelve 36kg at £190 (527.8p/kg).

JoJo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York sold a pen of eleven 42kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £217 (516.7p/kg) a pen of nineteen 40kg at £215 (537.5p/kg) a pen of twelve 42kg at (504.8p/kg) a pen of twelve at £212. A pen of 41kg at £208 (507.3p/kg) five 42kg at £205 and a pair of 46kg at £208.

The consignment of 78 hoggs from Boscar Flats sold to average 41.2kg £207.06 (501.9p/kg).

Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor Farm, Richmond sold a pen of three 63kg hoggs to make £216, with this home also selling a pen of sixteen 60kg Texel cross hoggs making £196, and three 78kg Suffolk cross hoggs making £209 and a pen of seven 60kg Suffolk cross hoggs making £195 from this home.

Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth, Ripon sold 52kg hoggs to £210.

Messrs Harrison, Grange Hall, Great Asby sold a pen of twelve 41kg hoggs to make £206 (502.4p/kg).

The annual show for pens of horned hoggs was held which saw a wonderful turnout of hill hoggs on show.

Our judge North Yorkshire Swaledale breeder Roy Nelson, Bordley awarded the overall champion pen to the first prize pen of ten Swaledale hoggs which weighed 53kg and sold for £151 from Messrs Clarke, Howgill Castle, Penrith and where purchased by Lancashire Direct Hala Meat Ltd.

The overall reserve pen went to the first placed pen of blackfaced hoggs which weighed 56kg and sold for £161 from first time consigners Messrs Walton, Wanwood Hill, Alston.

This home also sold Blackfaced hoggs to top at £165 for a pen of six 62kg, with another pen of seventeen 53kg making £155.50 and a pen of ten 42kg Blackfaced making £136 (323.8p/kg) from this home.

Swaledale hoggs also topped at 306.4p/kg for a pen of ten 39kg which made £119.50 from Messrs Sayer, Musgrave House, Great Musgrave.

Messrs Akrigg, Manor House Farm, Skipton sold a pen of ten 49kg Swaledale hoggs to make £149 (304.1p/kg).

Hill cheviot hoggs topped at 383.8p/kg for a pen of nineteen 40kg which made £153.50 from Messrs Armstrong, Crossfell House, Penrith. With this home also selling another pen of thirty three 41kg Hill Cheviot hoggs to make £157 (382.9p/kg).

Mule hoggs topped at £173 for a pen of 63kg from Messrs Walton, Wanwood Hill, Alston.

Messrs Wills, Fawcett Park sold a pen of 57kg Mules to make £170.

Messrs Fox, St Johns Kirk, Biggar sold a pen of 50kg Mule hoggs to make £158 (316p/kg), with this home also topping the Suffolk hoggs at 363.6p/kg for a pen of 44kg making £160.

Messrs Stobart, Stotley Hall Farm, Barnard Castle sold a pen of twelve 49kg Mules to make £153 (312.2p/kg).

A flying SQQ average of 368p/kg and overall average of 336p/kg and £155.77 for 3244 hoggs was achieved with this average including over 500 horned/hill hoggs and over 400 mule hoggs!

Twenty four pens and 131 hoggs sold between £200 - £230.

Seventy six pens and 415 hoggs sold between £180 - £230.

Twelve pens and 133 hoggs sold between 500 – 538p/kg.

Thirty one pens and 262 hoggs sold between 450 -538p/kg.
