Borderway Prime Bulls and Cattle

PRIME BULLS: A steady entry of 78 Prime bulls saw a good trade achieved throughout and without doubt a penny or two more than last week.  The furthest travelled bull topped the sale at £4022.80 for an 890kg British Blue from Messrs MacInnes, Ruaig, Isle of Tiree.  Local farmer, Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle sold top priced Limousin to £3955.20 for 960kgs at 22 months old.  Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Lanarkshire sold a strong run of bulls with the best two at £3615.50 for 825kgs and £3606.72 for 816kgs.  Top overall pence per kilo of 452 went to the top overall priced bull from Isle of Tiree and purchased  by Bowland Food, Preston.  Next best at 442 was one from Messrs Nimmo for 816kgs selling to A & D Meats.

Dairy bred bulls sold to a top of £2439 for an 813kg Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie and £2378.16 for 734kg from the same home.  Top pence per kilo of 347 went to a 572kg Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton selling to Jewitt Meats.  The same home also sold best Holstein Friesian to 337 for 627kgs.

More bulls required weekly again as trade looks to have firmed and more demand coming forward.

PRIME CATTLE : A much larger show of 98 forward this week with a lift in trade once again.  Another excellent mixture of dairy and suckler bred cattle entered the Borderway primestock ring with customers for everything, trade bounces upwards.  Topping the sale overall was an 839kg Charolais cross steer from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton receiving £3137.86 to Ed Nield.  Messrs Murray, Prior House, Carlisle sold next best, a 34 month old Charolais cross steer to £3129.12.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Park, Wigton sold yet another Charolais cross to £3093.26 for 733kgs.  Top Limousin cross was a 755kg steer from Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas at £3080.40 to Eric Hall.  Best British Blue was 694kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle at £2817.64.  Top pence per kilo of 426 went to two steers.  Firstly a 668kg Limousin cross from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton and secondly by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton for 642kg.

Heifers sold to just shy of £3000 at £2985.12 for 691kgs Limousin from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Best Aberdeen Angus came from a run of 12 marvellous heifers from Messrs Nixon, Ribton House, Workington peaking at £2803.60 for a 31 month old and weighing 860kgs.  Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle sold next best at £2801.92 for a 704kg Limousin cross at 20 months old.  Top overall pence per kilo for 444 went to a superb 542kgs Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Southwaite.  Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna sold a Beef Shorthorn cross not so far behind at 440 for 551kg, then Messrs Beattie, Woodfield, Annan sold the next best at 436 for 556 kgs.

Larger numbers of Prime steers and heifers are welcomed weekly here at Borderway with the largest ringside of 12 active buyers this week.
