Kirkby Stephen Store Cattle show & Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their February show and sale of store cattle, when a catalogue entry of 447 cattle were on offer.

Topping the sale at £2880 was a Limousin Heifer from Messrs Pickles, Far Gearstones, Chapel le Dale.

This home also sold Limousin cross heifer to £2765, £2755, £2645 and £2400.

Steers topped at £2850 from the first store animal in the ring from Messrs Maughan, Woodfoot, Crosby Ravensworth.

David Pentelow, Northants had a fantastic entry of thirty plus show cattle put before him, with a twelve month old Limousin steer from Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm, Austwick taking the champion rosette which then went on to sell for £2400 to the judge Messrs Pentelow.

The reserve rosette was awarded to a pure Limousin heifer from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor which sold for £2300.

Messrs Sayer, Musgrave House, Great Musgrave sold a Limousin heifers to make £2705 and £2425.

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside sold the third prize steer to make £2575 for a Limousin.

Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm, Brough Sowerby Limousin cross heifers to £2535, £2475 and £2445

Messrs Buckle, Bleathgill Farm, Barras sold thirteen month old Limousin cross steers to make £2500 and twelve month old British Blue heifers making £2400.

Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm also sold thirteen month old Limousin heifers to £2500, with ten month old Limousin heifers making £2455.

Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor sold two Limousin cross heifers to £2440.

Once again a good entry of dairy bred cattle were forward here at Kirkby Stephen with this section topping at £2165 for a ring-full of Holstein steers from Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Soulby. Messrs Longrigg, Breaks Hall, Appleby in Westmorland sold a pen of four twenty month old Friesian steers to make £1975 with their consignment of twenty three Friesian steers to average £1912.83.

Quality smart bred young cattle sold to extreme rates with eight month old Limousin cross heifers selling to £2135 from Messrs Wood, Crosby Lodge, who also sold a pen of four eight month old Limousin steers to £2045.

Messrs Brown, Asby Hall sold nine month old Limousin steers to £2025.

Messrs Wharton, Highfield sold seven month old Limousin cross steers to make £2000.

Heifers averaged £1944.76 (£412.62 up on the year)

Steers averaged £1912.40 (£287.74 up on the year)

To achieve a whole sale average of £1936.36 up £340.90 on the year for forty one more cattle sold.
