Borderway Prime Cattle and Cast Bulls

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 88 mixed quality Prime bulls forward seeing a sharper edge on all classes once again.  The very biggest and best quality bulls were short on demand but those vendors forward were well rewarded with a day’s top of £4331.16 going to a 954kg British Blue from Messrs Pattinson, Temon Farm, Brampton.  Next best a 924kg, 18 month old Limousin from Messrs McKie, High Threave, Newton Stewart achieving £4010.16.  Down the weight at 845kgs was a 19 month old Limousin from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan at £3734.90.  The top overall pence per kilo also went to the Temon’s British Blue bull receiving 454ppk.  Limousin sold to 442p and 440p for the best for Upper Brydekirk and Townfoot, Melmerby, Penrith.

Less dairy bulls forward on the whole today and certainly no super stars seeing a day’s top of £2272.44 for a nice 653kg Montbeliarde from Claremont Properties, Hay Close, Penrith.  Holsteins to £2125.44 for 648kgs from Smallthwaite Farms, Penrith and Holstein Friesian to £2008.96 for 584kgs from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton.  Top pence per kilo was the forementioned Montbeliarde from Claremont Properties at 348ppk and next best was Messrs Dickinson, Holstein Friesian at 344ppk.

As trade sees a noticeable lift in demand and prices, more are required on a weekly basis.

PRIME CATTLE : Another large entry of 85 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly Primestock sale whereby once again trade climbs as the deadweight drops.  Eight cattle sold over £3000 and bearing in mind £2700 is maximum achievable on the hook, 27 steers and heifers sold above this  with a days overall top of £3414.04 for an 959kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs McClelland, Knockshinnoch, Dumfries.  The same home also sold 813kgs to £3105.66.  Messrs Story, Jackson Rigg, Longtown sold 845kgs to £3143.40.  Highest priced Native was an 896kg Aberdeen Angus cross steer from Messrs Harrison, Aldermanseat, Gretna at £2983.68.  Best British Blue cross was 731kgs from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie to £2953.24.  A 33 month old Limousin cross from Messrs Nelson, Rosgill Head, Penrith sold to £2929.50 for 837kg   Top pence per kilo steer came from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton with 722 kgs Limousin selling to 418ppk to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and another to 414 for 734kgs from the same home.

Heifers sold to a top of £3033 for an outstanding 674kgs Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith.  This heifer was also top overall pence per kilo at 450p selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Next best was a 754kg Charolais cross heifer and last in the season from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries selling to £3016.  Next there was an 716kg Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Southwaite achieving £2971.40.  Second best pence per kilo came from Messrs Airey, The Close, Mealsgate selling 644kg and 608kg making 442p purchased by W Lindsay & Son, Butcher Shop, 8 Station Street, Cockermouth and Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.
