On Monday 28th June Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.  A great show of 450 Cast Cows, Bulls and Prime Cattle along with 1368 prime sheep were forward.

PRIME BULLS: A good show of 100 prime bulls forward at Borderways weekly sale, whereby a fantastic trade was achieved throughout the sale with the exception of the plainest black and whites which were harder to cash on the week.  The furthest travelled vendors received the trade they deserved selling the highest price bull at £1880.93, this was one from a marvellous run of 12 Limousins from Stratton Farms, East Hamptonshire; their now regular round trip of 600 miles proved worthwhile with an overall average of £1671.45.  Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth sold their best to £1791.69 purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria sold their top to £1707.48 purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  British Blue crosses to £1756.90 from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Aberdeen Angus crosses from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham to £1503.75 purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Top pence per kilo of 248.5p was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Hird, West End and secondly by Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk.

Dairy bred bulls sold to £1251.12 for a Friesian from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Capper Farming, Glasgow.  Norwegian Reds sold to £1239.14 from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton also bought by Capper Farming.  Top pence per kilo of 202.5p was for a Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Holstein Friesians to 193.5p from Messrs Johnston, Cote House, Carlisle.

PRIME CATTLE: A very small entry of only 30 Prime steers and heifers forward with trade seen to be even dearer once again.  Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie selling to £1792.08 purchased by W & E Fairlie, Letham.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle to £1745.96.  Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle to £1738.82 and D A Harrison, Hill House Farm, Wigton to £1698.13 all purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 242.5p was achieved twice from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle and secondly by Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie both for Limousin crosses.  Heifers sold to a top of £1650.16 from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton sold this run to a top of £1571.99 for light weight heifers purchased by Frasers Butchers, Hanover Street, Stranraer and Messrs Story, Newbiggin sold their 583 kg heifer at £1530.38 and was purchased by Black Brow Abattoir, Wigton.  Top overall pence per kilo was an outstanding black 543 kg heifer from Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton’s pen, this heifer peaked at 289.5p and was again purchased by Fraser Butchers, Hanover Street, Stranraer.

CAST COWS: A large show of 327 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to a keen ringside of 25 buyers which resulted in 16 selling for over 200ppk with Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor run of 10 outstanding cows sold to an amazing average of 735kg, 199.3p, £1465 with a top price of 789kg, 211.5p, £1668, 876kg, 184.5p, £1616 and 793kg, 203.5p, £1613 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr with other cows selling for 214.5p, 211.5p, 208.5p, 207.5p, 205.5p, 204.5p and 203.5p.  Messrs Robinson, Burmoor, Wark sold the top priced British Blue cross cow for 749kg, 215.5p, £1614 to Messrs Bowe.  Messrs Ridley, Wood Hall run of cows topped at 826kg, 191.5p, £1531 for a Limousin cross bought by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Bell, Wood Hall, Bardon Mill sold the top priced Simmental cow for 776kg, 200.5p, £1555 to Charles Kirkpatrick, with a Limousin cross from the same home selling for 652kg, 200.5p, £1307 also to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Fox, St Johns Kirk sold the top priced Charolais cow for 896kg, 172.5p, £1545 to Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Hunter, Bridge Mill sold the top price per kilo British Blue cow which sold for 539kg, 219.5p, £1183 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Maxwell, Druidhall sold an Aberdeen Angus heifer for 207.5p bought by Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Lawson, Hundith House run of Limousin cross cows topped at 794kg, 176.5p, £1401 and 663kg, 206.5p, £1369 bought by Messrs Bowe and Jewitt Meats.  Messrs Pritchard, Evistones sold a Limousin cross cow for 620kg, 201.5p, £1249 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Whitehead, Hill House Close sold a Beef Shorthorn heifer for 655kg, 200.5p, £1313 to Jewitt Meats.  Messrs Rome, Niven Hill run of outstanding Limousin cows topped at 607kg, 200.5p, £1217 also to Jewitt Meats.

All classes of dairy cast cows were again in great demand.  Messrs Steel, The Laurels sold two Holstein cross heifers for 708kg, 179.5p, £1270 and 757kg, 161.5p, £1222 bought by David Holmes and Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Harrison, Baggrow run of cows topped at 855kg, 145.5p, £1244 for a 103 month old cow bought by Les Fell and a Holstein cross heifer from the same home sold for 617kg, 182.5p, £1126 also bought by Les Fell.  Messrs Gorst, Low Wood sold a Holstein cross cow for 884kg, 140.5p, £1242 bought by Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Workman, The Beeches sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 814kg, 148.5p, £1208 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Woodman & Son, Hill House sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 195.5p to Capper Farming.  Messrs Hyslop, Meinside selling a Holstein cross heifer for 181.5p to Les Fell.  Messrs Vevers, High Plains also sold a Holstein cross heifer for 180.5p to Capper Farming.  Evening Hill Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 177.5p to Les Fell.  Messrs Baynes, Marleycote sold a Dairy Shorthorn heifer for 171.5p to Alan Jarvis.

CAST BULLS: 14 stock bulls were on offer on Monday with the trade the dearest seen for some time.  Messrs Bell, Torpenhow Hall sold an outstanding British Blue for 1120kg, 178.5p, £1999 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Robley, Demense Farm sold a Limousin cross stock bull for 1126kg, 168.5p, £1897 also to Owain Llyr.  DA Harrison, Hill House sold two Limousin stock bulls for 984kg, 173.5p, £1707 and 946kg, 167.5p, £1584 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Maxwell, Druidhall sold an Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 967kg, 156.5p, £1513 to Jewitt Meats.  Messrs Pritchard, Evistones sold a Limosuin stock bull for 743kg, 194.5p, £1445 to Rob Medcalf.

PRIME SHEEP : On Monday 28th June 2021 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly prime sheep sale where a depleted entry of 1368 head were forward.  A mixture of a fall in trade nationally from Tuesday onwards last week with an upturn in the weather saw fewer sheep forward, however, Borderway once again delivered for the farmers with an overall average of 258ppk showing a rise of 20-25p on Thursdays trade with some first cross mule types being reported as 40ppk dearer at 260-265ppk.

James Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont followed up last weeks trade topping antics by repeating the same feat, seeing his consignment of 20 top at £200 to Mr R Skelton.  Jack Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton brought some cracking Beltex lambs to Borderway this week, his leader was a 38kg lamb selling at £190 or 500ppk, again to Mr R Skelton.  Beltex lambs saw a market average of 325ppk achieved.  Suffolk lambs sold to £156 for a fabulous Suffolk cross from Joseph & Julia Wilson, Meadow Farm, Camerton which sold to Tony Harrison Butchers, Mains Street, Cockermouth.
