Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their Annual Kirkby Classic Prize sale of potential show and store cattle, when a catalogue entry of 542 cattle were on offer.
The sale topped at £6500 for the reserve overall champion, the first placed haltered British Blue steer from Messrs Marston, Easegill Head, Kirkby Stephen which was purchased by Messrs Nisbet, Ayrshire.
The judging of the Kirkby Classic was in the capable hands of Mr Andy Ireland, Ayrshire who had the difficult task of judging the fantastic entry of 60 show cattle put before him.
Taking the overall championship was the first placed haltered Limousin steer from Messrs Huck,
Sowerthwaite Farm, Austwick which sold to £5800 and was purchased by the judge.
Next in the leading prices was a fourteen month old Limousin heifer making £5500 from Messrs Everatt, Oak Tree Farm, Goole on his first time selling here at Kirkby Stephen with this going to Cropper Butchers, Long Preston.
Messrs Kelly, Nether Hall Farm, Kirkby Lonsdale sold a pure Limousin heifer to make £5300 and was purchased by Messrs Marston, Easegill Head, Kirkby Stephen.
Completing the five cattle to hit over the £5000 mark was the first placed haltered British Blue heifer at eight month old from Messrs Smith Jackson, Lipwood, Northumberland selling to Messrs May, Worcestershire. This home also sold a nine month old British Blue steer to make £4000.
The first placed unhaltered Limousin heifer and champion heifer at thirteen month old sold to make £4800 from Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm selling to Messrs Maciver, Ayeshire. With Messrs Huck also selling a 11 month old Limousin steer to make £4000 selling to Messrs Warren.
Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House, Barbon were awarded both first placed rosettes in the two haltered Limousin heifer classes, with a twelve month old selling to £4800 to Messrs Wynne, Derbyshire and the 11 month old selling to £4500 to Messrs Young, Crewe.
Messrs Acton, Scarr House, Leyburn sold the reserve champion heifer, a thirteen month old British Blue to make £4000 selling to Messrs Barnett, Shap.
A notable consignment of ten Limousin cross Blues heifers at an average age of twelve month old from Messrs Marston, Easegill Head sold to average a fantastic £3430.
Messrs Pickles, Far Gearstones, Chapel le Dale sold a seven month old Limousin heifer to make £3550 and was purchased by Messrs May. With this home selling another seven month old Limousin heifer at £2450 to Messrs Warren.
A run of 24 eight to twelve month old Limousin steers sold to average £2104.79 from Messrs Smith & Shepherd, Glebelands, Knock.
It was quoted by several sellers and buyers that todays trade was the dearest seen and exceeded other show potential and store cattle sales so far! The 60 show cattle presented averaged a whopping £3358.51 (up £649.73 on the year) including the unhaltered and non prize winning cattle. Outwith the show store heifers averaged £2206.68 (up £268.27 on the year) with steers averaging £2030.27 (up £183.23) resulting in an overall sale average of £2116.68 (up £244.31 on the year) for 43 more cattle sold.
