On Wednesday 11th March Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store cattle. Store cattle numbers remaining very tight with only 300 strong stores forward this week. Trade saw yet another flyer and way more than what was expected, a lot of poorer and smaller heifers were forward resulting in a reduced average of £2001 but the bigger picture is that cattle would be dearer for the quality. No huge steers forward today but despite this quality steers sold to £2480 twice firstly by Messrs Batey, High Knells, Carlisle for a Limousin cross and secondly for an Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Beattie, Shield Green, Carlisle. Messrs Fishwick, Thornship, at Keld, Penrith sold their best to £2470.
Heifers sold to a days top of £2400 on five occasions, firstly two Blue cross heifers from Messrs Smith, Campingholm, Gretna, then for Limousins crosses from Messrs Johnstone, Low Flow , Wigton and Messrs Udale, Sideway Bank, Penrith and finally for a British Blue from Messrs McKie, Lawrence Holme, Wigton, Charolais to £2330 from Messrs Gillespie, High Stand and Simmental crosses to £2320 from Messrs Potts, Chapel House, Brampton.
Dairy steers sold to £2150 for a Montbeliarde from Millantae Farms, Lockerbie. Holsteins to £2060 from Messrs Graham, Kirkland, Lockerbie and £2030 for a pen of four from Messrs Atkinson, Hawkrigg, Appleby.
