Borderway Prime Cattle and Bulls

PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 99 Prime bulls forward saw twelve sell over £3000 and a sale day average of £2479.59 for the 99 forward.  Trade not just as bright as the last few weeks with a couple of pence per kilo on average back.  Topping overall was a 919kg Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith at £3933.32 with 882kg from the same home selling to £3633.84 both purchased by A & D Meats.  The top 10 bulls were all British Limousin pure or crossbred.  Best British Blue cross was an 896kg dairy bred from Messrs Mandale, Lambfield, Carlisle at £3082.24 with next best being 719kgs from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, £2983.85 at 19 months old.  A top pence per kilo of 436p went to an 804kg Limousin crossbred from Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton equating to £3505.44.  This same home also sold 805kg to 432ppkg, £3477.60 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Dairy bulls forward lacked quality and meat overall with the best a 739kg Holstein from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith at £2083.98.  A lighter 651kg Montbeliarde from Seymour Farms, Wigton peaked at £2044.14, best pence per kilo of 328p went to a 582kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Stalker, Ratten Castle, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE : A fantastic entry of 101 Prime steers and heifers forward at the Primestock sale of bullocks and heifers at Borderway Mart.  The edge would be off this week’s trade in comparison to that of last week but despite this, with deadweights maximum achievable price of £2625, our steer average of £2618.21 still looks amazing from everything from black and whites to the very best shaped.  Topping overall was a 785kg Limousin cross at £2998.70 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle.  Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie sold the same weight to £2983.  Messrs Gate, Hollins Farm, Cockermouth sold a huge 871kg to £2961.40 and Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Southwaite sold a smart 714kg to £2927.40.  Best Charolais cross was 844kgs out of the Holstien Friesian Cow from Messrs Story, Blackrigg, Longtown at £2894.92.  Highest price native was £2754 for a 765kg Sussex from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie.  Top pence per kilo steer was 621kg Limousin cross from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton at 412ppkg selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Next best was Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hills, 714kg Limousin cross a 410ppkg.

Heifers peaked at £2986.20 for a 790kg Limousin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle with next best 727kgs from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont at £2922.54 selling to Pioneer Foods.  Top overall pence per kilo of 416p went to a 690kg, 22 month old Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill.  Best British Blue cross was 580kg from Messrs Maws, Wintershields, Bewcastle at 412p.
