On Monday 6th April Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store lambs and breeding sheep and although it was a Bank Holiday showed no let up in trade for store lambs and breeding sheep.
A serious demand for store lambs was witnessed with a similar show to previous weeks going on to average an astonishing £142.35. Topping the sale went to Mr Laurie Brunskill, Carlisle selling a Texel to £170 and £164. Beltex lambs topped at £161 from Mr Jack Edgar, Fellside who sold 40 lambs to average £152.82. Suffolk lambs topped at £131 from Messrs Nichol, Newcastleton and Mules to £130. Bleu de Maine sheep topped at £159 for a trio from Mr AL Mounsey, Wigton. Hill sheep topped at £137.50 for a pen of 6 from M/s Gott, Cockermouth.
A much larger show of ewes and lambs were forward with a total sale average of £128 a life being achieved. Topping the sale went to Mr Corrie McWhirter selling a Beltex shearling with a single lamb to £190. Chelsea Walton, Goodlie Hill farm sold a pair of Beltex 3 and 4 crop with singles to £180 a life. Suffolks with singles lambs topped at £162 from M/s Knox, Carlisle. Young enthusiast Ethan Rudd, Penrith sold a superb pen of 18 mules ewes with lambs to £132 a life. Dutch spotted with lambs sold to £166 a life for a shearling with a pair of lambs from M/s Pinguey, Wigton. Messrs Gilhespy, Tedcastle brought some nice Kerry hills with strong twin lambs to £114 a life.
A much improved ringside of buyers was forward with a real buzz being seen throughout the sale. Many more could be sold to advantage.
