Border & Lakeland Spring Bull Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

WHINNOW BULLS SORE TO NEW HEIGHTS
Strong demand for bulls with high solids

The 23rd Annual Spring Bull sale held on behalf of the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club had an outstanding selection of bulls on offer from the best cows and the best herds in the UK.  Bulls topped at 11,000gns with the overall average coming to £4486 per life.  A packed ringside had buyers from across the UK in attendance with buyers recorded as far north as Aberdeen and south to Kent.

The show was sponsored by Finance For Farms and judged professionally by Eugene McErlean from Ayrshire.  He selected Gerrard Perfection as his overall Champion who was consigned by Andrew Carter from Gerrard House Farm near Wigton.  Gerrard Perfection was sired by Parfect and bred from a high production dam sired by Doc, followed by a further six Excellent dams all with high production and massive lifetime yields.  This beautiful Champion bull was bought for the joint Holstein top price of 7000gns by Mr Howat from Ayrshire.

Winning Reserve Champion was a well-developed and well-bred bull from the Armour family from the Annandale herd near Moffat.  Annandale Kinghorn was bred from the Kimberley cow family, his first six dams all classified Excellent with several producing over 100-ton lifetime.  The foundation cow was Brynhyfryd Raider Kim, a Royal Show winner at the start of the Century.  Kinghorn sold for 7,000gns to Mr Mercer from near Bolton.

The day firmly belonged to the Whinnow herd owned by the Blamire family from near Wigton, who topped the price charts with two exceptional sons of Inch Jake.   Topping the sale at 11,000gns was Whinnow Jewel a British Friesian sire bred from Excellent classified dams all with massive production records.  His dam will soon achieve the 100-ton lifetime award and has consistently been a 5% butterfat cow.  His grand dam was Excellent 94 points and was twice a winner of the UK’s Production Award with lactations over 15,000kgs.  This special bull was bought by Mr Howat from Ayrshire.

Selling for 10,000gns was Whinnow Maxim who was bought by Mr Welsh from Ayrshire.  Maxim’s maternal brother sold for the same price in the 2024 Spring Sale and his other maternal brother Beaufort Milkman has been marketed globally by Genus ABS stud.  Both these top sellers consigned by the Whinnow herd were sired by the UK’s number one Production Sire, Inch Jake with a Production Index of PLI+£427.

Kevin & Chrstine Wilson owners of the Warnelview herd from Carlilse sold 11 well-bred bulls from several of their most prolific breeding lines.  They topped at 6,200gms for Warnelview Boden who was bought by Mr Meridth from Aberdeen.  He was sired by Renegade and bred from the high production line of the Belle cow family, his dam topping at over 15,000kgs and his grand dam produced over 100-ton lifetime.
