BERRYHOLME FLY HIGH WITH FLO

An outstanding consignment of pedigree dairy cattle went under the hammer in the April Border & Lakeland Club show and sale held at Borderway.  Cows sold giving over 60kgs and many heifers sold producing over 40kgs with a large percentage of animals bred from elite pedigrees.  Prices topped at 4,400gns with and overall average of £2931 per life; up £285 on the year and a rise of £144 on the month.  The sale finished with a special group of maiden heifers that topped at 2,300gns to average £1984.

The show was judged by Dan Bargh from the Woodclose Herd near Skelton in Cumbria and was sponsored from Finance for Farms.  His Overall Champion went to Newtonmoss Ryder May who was consigned by the Fisher family from Penrith.  She was sired by Ryder Red and bred from a Denver dam that produced over 11000kgs as a three year old.  She sold for 2,850gns to Mr Evans from Whitchurch.

Winning the Reserve Champion rosette was Stowbeck Apps Juliet 3 who was consigned by the Wilson family from Skirwith Hall Farms near Penrith.  She was sired by Lindenright Apps and was bred from a deep cow family, with six generations of Excellent or Very Goods with the foundation cow being, Stowbeck Igniter Juliet who classified Excellent 95 and produced over 70 ton lifetime. This impressive heifer was bought by Mr Coulthard from Longtown.

The day firmly belonged to the Wright family from Kendal who sold five heifers to average £3542 and topped the overall trade at 4,400gns for Berryholme Conway Flo who was bought by Mr Mitchell from Ayrshire.  She was sired by Conway and was bred from seven generations Excellent or Very Goods that included three National Champions.

This special line of the Flo family continued its success for the Berryholme herd with, Berryholme Rubels Flo selling for 3,400gns to the Smokey Hill Holstein herd in Ayrshire.  She was sired by Rubels Red, with this line again featuring the three National Champions.

Milking cows topped at 3,100gns on two occasions, first for Bankview Victor Lynme who was consigned by Mark Walton from Kirby Stephen.  She was producing 51kgs at 4% protein and was bought by the Jackson’s from Dumfries.  The Bankview herd sold the highest yielding heifer for 3,200gns to Mr Robinson from Lanercost, she was giving almost 50kgs and was sired by Luster P.

The Swaites herd owned by John Adamson from Lanark sold three high production animals peaking at 60kgs and equalled the top price cow, with Swaites Bridie who sold for 3,100gns to the Jackson’s from Dumfries.

Consistency was in abundance with the consignment of ten heifers from the Espland herd owned by Alan Cannon from Appleby.  They averaged £2934 and topped at 3,100gns for winning Senior Heifer in milk, Espland Adorable Melody who was bought by Mr Farish from Wigton.

The sale concluded with 15 maiden heifers from the Belaw herd owned by Rob Bellerby from North Yorkshire.  They topped at 2,300gns to average £1984 per life.  Topping at 2,300gns was the youngest heifer in the group, she was born in August and was sired by OCD Cirrus Madrid P, her dam was a Very Good Pepper that is still milking in the Belaw herd in her fifth lactation.  The next five dams were all Excellent with massive lifetime production.
