On Thursday 23rd April saw the first ewe and lamb sale take in Lazonby Market. A return of ewe and lambs were a delight to sell as the shinning gem in the eden valley took an early appearance as 500 head went on to average £140 per life. The sale began with the dispersal of stock on behalf of Messrs Burrow and Rutter Armstrong selling Swaledale ewes 4 – 7 crop with mule wether & gimmer lambs selling to £118, £115, £110 a life. A Swaledale average of £106 per life was the sale home selling 2 shear mule ewes with single lambs to £138 per life.
The first pen of Suffolks 3 shear with single lambs to £182 & £158 for 3 shears with twins. Suffolk shearlings were in hot demand as Messrs Richardson attended with a super run of first cross shearlings with Suffolk lambs selling to average £166.55. Topping went to a couple with single beltex lambs to £200 per life. The same home sold a pen of 10 with single Suffolk lambs to £190, £189 & £185. Twins sold to £154 & £150. A great buzz was seen around the market with both sellers and purchasers full of spring delight.
