Borderway Primestock Sale

On Monday 7^th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.  Once again a great entry of 455 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with 2629 prime sheep was on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A very good entry of 94 prime bulls with yet another great trade seen throughout the sale with plainest seeing the biggest rise on the week.  Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle who attained £1696.37 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Messrs Watson, Sanders Close, Brampton sold the second best at £1681.63.  This bull was also top overall pence per kilo of 249.5.   Maine Anjou bred bulls from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House Lockerbie to £1664.24 and was purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Simmentals for the same home to £1535.63 and Salers to £1515.29 from Messrs Stobart, The Square, Carlisle.  Dairy bred bulls far better to sell on the week with a top of £1197.15 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Graham,  South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Bowland Foods,  Preston.  Messrs Armour, Milton Moffat sold another to £1194.12 purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Top pence per kilo of 189.5 was paid to Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton and 188.5p from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith for Friesians both purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE: A much larger entry of 48 prime steers and heifers forward with a sharper trade achieved on the week. Topping the sale overall was an outstanding Limousin x heifer presented to the ring by Messrs JJ Crichton. Loughrigg Farm, Egremont receiving £1947.83 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Rae, Boghead Farm, Dumfries, first time vendor to this ring with prime cattle, saw a top of £1753.99 and was purchased again by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg sold another to £1736.06 purchased by Black Brow Abattoir, Wigton. Top British Blue was from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton purchased by Kings Butchers for £1501.99. Top overall pence per kilo of 260.5p was paid to Messrs Jarman, Brow Top, Workington for a Limousin x purchased by Black Brow Abattoir. Two heifers sold to 259.5p firstly by Loughrigg Farm and secondly by Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton purchased by Black Brow and Charles Kirkpatrick. Steers saw a days top of £1810.97 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg achieving £1810.97. Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle sold to £1767.60 and Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle to £1748.46 all purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais crosses from Messrs Story, Jackson Rigg, Longtown sold to £1753.59 and top British Blue cross came from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake receiving £1726.60 and was purchased by W & E Fairlie, Lethem. Messrs Oxley & Co, Barholm Mains sold two outstanding Blue cows for 906kg at 234.5p totalling £2124 and 901kg at 227.5p totalling £2049 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm sold an outstanding Blue x cow for 816kg at 240.5p totalling £1962 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold a Blue x cow for 840kg at 229.5p totalling £1927 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm’s run of cows topped at 975kg at 187.5p totalling £1828 to Charles Kirkpatrick. DA Harrison & Co, Hill House Farm’s cows topped at 795kg at 210.5p totalling £1673 bought by Owain Llyr. PRIME SHEEP: Prime and cast sheep saw lamb numbers more than doubled on the week to 2,338 head, with an additional 291 cast ewes. Trade for all classes remains strong this week.  Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston rang the bell selling to £190 for 46kg Beltex lambs, which also topped per kilo at 413p selling to Tony Harrison, Butchers, Main Street, Cockermouth. Katrina Donaldson, The Guards, Wigton sold 39kg Beltex lambs at 400ppk, £156 to Mr M Helliwell, Rochdale. Heavy lambs sold to £158 from Messrs Mounsey, Ashfield, Laversdale and 20pens of lambs sold in excess of £140 with 46 lots over £130; 29 lots also sold over 300ppk. 40 vendors made the trip fro West Cumbria to supply the trade in Borderway and all left delighted.
