“The annual “grass day” took place in Borderway with a super show of grass stirks being forward with customers for all classes, the national trend of bulls met resistance for all older and well fleshed bulls.

A total of 100 bulls were forward with top price for a British blue from Messrs Ridsdale, Yew Tree selling to £2190. Aberdeen Angus bulls topped at £1810 from Andrew Vance, Bridgehouse farm. Thomas Todd, Wyndham sold Fleckvieh bulls to £1700 and £1690. Limousin bulls topped at £2090 from George Rome, Niven hill who sold 4-year-old bulls to average £1975. Simmental bulls topped at £2010 from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains.

A show of 113 grass steers went on to average £1540.97 with a lot of customers delighted with the days trading. Topping the steers went to the first steer in the ring from Brian Ridsdale, yew tree selling to £1890. Angus steers topped at £1780 from local consignor Edward Dean, Kirkhouse for a single and £1740, £1670 & £1600. Limousin steers topped at £1860 for a super 3 from Alan Hodge, The grove and Herefords topped at £1690 from Messrs Lowthian, West Brownrigg, Simmentals topped at £1560 from M/s Bainbridge, Heather Croft and Blues topped at £1630 from Messrs Moore, Brayshaw who sold 17 to £1452.94

A strong show of 184 heifers sold to average £1359.46 with top price going to a pair of Wagyu x heifers from Heatherlodge farms selling to £1910. The same home sold 5 heifers to £1700 and 8 to £1500. Limousin heifers topped at £1780 for a single from Messrs Robinson, Hawksteel. Simmentals topped at £1590 from Messrs Cadzow, Tranent. The same home sold blues to £1660. Charolais topped at £1550 from Sue Dale-Sunley, castle Douglas.

A great show of grass stirks were forward with classes confidentially sold given the current decline in Prime beef. Many more could have been sold to advantage.
