Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart Held Their Weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday Evening when 2,592 sheep where forward consisting of 2,193 Prime Hoggs, 359 Cast Sheep and 40 Spring Lambs.

An overall sale average of 414.3p/kg, an SQQ average of 430.2p/kg and £195.13 was achieved.

The sale topped at £250 on three separate occasions firstly for a pen of four 55kg Texel hoggs from Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm, Penrith with this home also selling a pen of ten 71kg hoggs also at £250.

Also reaching £250 was a pen of six 48kg Beltex cross hoggs from Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York. Jojo topped the pence per kilo at 600p for a pen of seventeen 40kg Beltex cross hoggs making £240. This home also sold a pen of eight 49kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £240, a pen of nine 46kg Texel cross to make £237 (515.2p/kg and a pen of twenty-two 41kg Beltex cross to make £231 (563.4p/kg).

The consignment of 100 hoggs from this home sold to average 44.5kg £227.75 (511.8p/kg)

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown sold 46kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £244 (530.4p/kg).

Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Soulby sold a pen of eight 41kg to make £225.50 (550p/kg).

Scotch Blackface hoggs sold to £209.50 for a pen of twenty-seven at 54kg (388p/kg) from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown with this home also selling pens of thirty-five Blackfaced hoggs at 45kg to top the pence per kilo at 433.3p totalling £195, with other pens from this home making £199.50 (399p/kg) for 50kg and £186 (432.6p/kg) for 43kg.

Cheviot hoggs sold to £205 for a pen of twenty-six 49kg (418.4p/kg) from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown with this home selling pens of twenty-six 45kg to make 432.2p totalling £194.50 and a pen of thirty three 43kg making £193 (448.8p/kg)

The consignment from of 1094 Cheviot and Scotch Blackfaced hoggs from Smalmstown sold to average £194.56 and 421.6p/kg.

Messrs Bell, Bridge Farm, York sold a pen of twenty-seven 49kg Cheviots to make £197 (402p/kg).

Mules topped at £180 from Messrs Wells, Middle Shipley Farm, Hamsterley.

Messrs Fisher sold a pen of 57kg Suffolk crosses to make £223 (391.2p/kg) with this home also selling a pen of 35 51kg to make £210 411.8p/kg with another pen of 15 45kg Suffolks making £194 (431.1p/kg)

Messrs Dawson, York also sold a pen of 45kg Swaledales to make £165 (366.7p/kg).

Cast Sheep

Cast sheep topped at £300 for a Texel cross ewe from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside with another Texel cross ewe from this home making £261. This home also sold Beltex ewes to make £287 for a pair, and £241 for a pen of five. With the consignment from this home selling to average £260.

Messrs Brogden, Helbeck, Brough sold a Texel ewe to make £269 and a pair to make £237, with Suffolks from this home selling to £222.

Mule ewes topped at £197 for a pen of four from Messrs Taylor, Waterhouses, Asby. This home also sold Rough Fell ewes to £164 for a pen of six.

Swaledale ewes topped at £150 for a pen of five from Messrs Elliott, Harbour Flatt, Murton.

Cast rams topped at £248 for a Bluefaced Leicester from Messrs Bainbridge, Dousgill Farm, Barningham.

Spring Lambs

An increased number of spring lambs were on offer and seeing an increase in demand from buyers as firms look to change over to lamb. An overall average of 459.5p/kg was achieved with an SQQ average of 464.2p and £205.35 per head.

This section topped at £268 and (570.2p/kg) for a 47kg Dutch Texel lamb from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm Ormside and was purchased by Dowdings Butchers, Appleby. This lamb was awarded the first prize rosette in our May Spring Lamb show which was judged by Bruce Jackson, York who we give thanks too.

Messrs Sowerby also sold a pair of 46kg Texel cross lambs to make £222 (482.6p/kg) selling to Steadman Butchers, Kirkby Stephen.

Messrs Slee, Street House, Kirkby Thore sold a 47kg Texel lamb to make £227 (483p/kg), with a pair of 47kg Texel cross from this home selling to £219 (466p/kg), a pen of three 40kg to make £207 (517.5p/kg) and another pen of three at 45kg making £205 (455.6p/kg).

Receiving the second placed in the show was a 42kg Texel cross lamb which made £220 (523.8p/kg) from Megan, Jackson,  Powis House, Long Marton. With Messrs Jackson, Powis House selling three pens of lambs at 44kg each to make £203 (461.4p/kg).

Messrs Wilson, Searchlight Farm, Middlesborough sold a pen of seven 44kg Texel cross lambs to make £209 (475p/kg) with 51kg Texels from this home making £206 and a pair of 46kg making £192 (417.4p/kg).
