Kirkby Stephen prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart Held Their Weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday Evening when 3,344 sheep where forward consisting of 2,872 Prime Hoggs, 403 Cast Sheep and 69 Spring Lambs.

An overall sale average of 412.6p/kg with a SQQ average of 429p/kg and a whopping £200.94 per head was achieved for 2,872 hoggs sold which included 1135 horned hoggs.

The sale topped at £271 for a Beltex cross hogg from Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall, Kirkby Stephen. This home also sold Rouge hoggs to make £267.

Topping the pence per kilo at 520.8p was a pen of seven 48kg Beltex cross hoggs totalling £250 from Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York. This home also sold 60kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £260 (433.3p/kg) and  61kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £253 (414.8p).

The consignment of 95 Texel, Suffolk and Beltex hoggs from this home sold to average 53.9kg £235.06 (435.8p).

Messrs Raine, West Lea, Appleby in Westmorland sold a pen of 59kg Beltex hoggs to make £254 (430.5p/kg)

Heavy hoggs sold exceptionally well and saw this biggest increase with Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall, Staffield selling a pen of thirteen heavy Charollais hoggs to make £270.50, with another pen of twelve making £264 and a pen of fourteen heavy Texel hoggs making £262.50. The consignment of 79 heavy Charollais and Texel hoggs from this home sold to average £260.46.

Texel hoggs topped at £270 from Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth, Ripon.

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown sold a pen of twenty 44kg Texel cross hoggs to make 485.2p/kg and £213.50.

Suffolk hoggs sold to £260 for a pair of heavy hoggs from Messrs Jackson, East View, Lamonby.

Cheviot hoggs sold to £239 for a pen of eight from Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York, this home also sold a pen of twenty cheviot hoggs to make £223.50.

Cheviot hoggs sold to 452.4p/kg for two pens of twenty six and twenty eight 42kg hoggs totalling £190 from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown with this home also selling pens of sixteen 48kg at £206, pens of twenty 45kg at £198.50 (441.1p) and a pen of twenty-seven 43kg at £194.50 (452.3p).

With Messrs Fisher topped the Scotch blackfaced hoggs at £217 per head for a pen of ten at 56kg and the pence per kilo with a pen of forty 42kg hoggs making 444p/kg totalling £186.50 with other pens of blackfaced hoggs selling at £211 for 52kg (405.8p) for a pen of twenty-three, a pen of twenty five 49kg making £203.50 (415.3p) and a pen of forty 43kg making £190.50 (443p).

Mule hoggs sold to £230 from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill, Distington.

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown sold a pen of ten 43kg Mule hoggs to make £185 (430.2p)

Swaledale hoggs sold to £186 and 413.3p for a pen of nineteen at 45kg from Messrs Akrigg, Manor House Farm, Skipton.

Spring Lambs

Numbers and trade continue to increase for the spring lambs with firms now looking for increased numbers of lamb. An overall average of 476.87p/kg was achieved with an SQQ average of 481.5p and £205.96 per head.

This section topped at £234 for a 46kg Texel cross lamb from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm Ormside and was purchased by Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall, Kirkby Stephen sold a a pen of ten 42kg Charollais lambs to make £213 (507.1p) and also sold a pair of 39kg Beltex cross lamb to top the pence per kilo at 538.5p totalling £210.

Messrs Slee, Street House, Kirkby Thore sold a 45kg Texel cross hogg to make £219 (486.7p/kg).

Suffolk lambs topped at £207.50 for a pen of 44kg from Messrs Wilson, Searchlight Farm, Middlesborough.
