Quality was in abundance at the June Border & Lakeland Holstein Club show and sale with an outstanding selection of fresh cows, heifers and in-calf heifers consigned from many of the best dairy farms in the North of England and Scotland.  Buyers from across the UK packed the famous Borderway sale ring that saw the trade top at 4,000gns with the overall average for fresh heifers coming to £3118.

The show was judged by William Oldfield from the Whinhill Holstein herd and was sponsored by Finance For Farms.  His Overall Champion went to Stowbeck Tarmac Gilly who was consigned by the Wilson family from Skirwith Hall Farms near Penrith.  Gilly was sired by Westcoast Tarmac and bred from a solid line of cows well known for their impressive lifetime production and high classifications.  She also topped the sale selling for 4,000gns to the Blezard family from near Preston.  This was the second consecutive month that a daughter of Tarmac topped the sale.  The Stowbeck herd sold another six heifers to average almost £3400.

The Reserve Champion went to Holehouse Letsgo Milly who was consigned by the Logan family from Ayrshire.  She was sired by Vogue Letsgo and was bred from a Very Good classified Lambda dam with production over 13,000kgs.  This fancy uddered heifer sold for 3,500gns to Blezard family from near Preston.  The Holehouse herd sold another ten heifers to average over £3000.

Netherside Holsteins owned by the Yuill family from Lanarkshire are well known for their ability to breed modern robust cattle. They sold Netherside Cruz Chersie for 3,800gns to Tack Farms in Herefordshire.  She had a high genomic index and was sired by Pine-Tree Cruzer, another five heifers from this herd sold to average £3444.

Two exceptional heifers from Richard and Sue Armstong’s Wolfa herd near Penrith attracted a lot of interest from the busy ringside.  Wolfa Adorable Fawn sold for 3,750gns she was bred from nine generations of excellent dams going back to the famous Quietcove Valiant Fawn and Wolfa Arrow Celica sold for 3,700gns both going to Blezard family from near Preston.

Deep cow families with a proven track record came to the fore at this quality event with Woodcatt Adorable Roxy selling for 3,700gns.  She was consigned by the Horsley family from near Penrith who sold another five heifers to average £3265.  This powerful framed heifer traced back to a famous Charles daughter that was imported from Canada in the early 90’s from Hanoverhill and went on to be an All Britian winner.
