BEAUTIFUL BETTY TOPS TRADE FOR WORMANBY

July Border & Lakeland sale averages £3444

Buyers from across the UK travelled to Borderway for the July Border & Lakeland Show and Sale, the event also featured the Production Sale of the Ellaway herd and the Drointon Summer Heatwave Sale.  The sale was brimming with quality Holstien cattle all producing large volumes of milk with many animals bred from outstanding proven maternal lines. 

The Border & Lakeland Sale topped at 3,900gns with the overall average coming to £3,444 with only seven animals selling below £3000.  The Ellaway Prodction sale topped at 4,600gns to average £3153 and the Drionton Summer Heatwave Sale topped at 5,000gns to average £2266.  Buyers from 21 counties were recorded on the buyers list with cattle going to all the home nations. 

The show was judged by Chris Davis from Tack Farms in Herefordshire and was sponsored by the Paragon Veterinary Group.  His Overall Champion was Lesmay Mecca Jan, consigned by the Weatherup family from Fife.  She was sired by Mecca P and was giving 48kgs, and sold to Parkham Farms.  Eleven other cows and heifers sold from the Lesmay herd to average £3465.

We must give special mention to Hunter and Lane Weatherup who sold their first ever animal in the Border & Lakeland Sale under their own prefix.  Hunterlane Mecca P Tamara sold for 3,100gns!  We wish these two rising stars all the best in their Holstein breeding careers.

The Reserve Champion went to Berryholme Ferraro Flo who was consigned by the David Wright from Kendal.  She was bred from seven generations of Excellent dams going back to several National Champions.  She sold for 3,800gns to the Armstong family from near Wigton.

Top price in the Border & Lakeland Sale went to Wormanby Eyecandy Betty who was consigned by the Hodgson family from Wormanby Farms near Carlisle.  She was sired by Eye Candy and bred from four Excellent dams all with massive lifetime production.  This powerful framed heifer sold for 3,900gns to Tack Farms in Herefordshire.

Westcoast Tarmac has been leading the price chart lists now for serval months and selling for 3,800gns was another one of his daughters.  Newtonmoss Tarmac Petula was consigned by Matt & Richard Fisher from Penrith, she was bred from eleven generations of Excellent or Very Good dams going back to La Presentation Daurel, who was one of Canada’s Highest Star Brood cows with 64 Breeding Stars.  This impressive heifer was bought by the Armstong family from near Wigton.

Deep cow families were a strong theme throughout this high quality event.  Grayridge Holsteins owned by David & Jim Gray from near Glasgow sold Grayridge Royal Ashlyn for 3,800gns.  She was bred from a standout line of the Ashlyn family going back to Willsbro and Riverdane and then the famous Tri-Day Ashlyn EX96.  She was bought by Mr Frame from Lanark.

Ellaway Production Sale

The Graves family who farm at Elephant Farm near Southwaite have developed a highly productive, profitable and functional herd of Holsteins built on strong maternal lines.  The sale comprised 50 of the most recently calved cows and heifers along with 30 late lactation and dry cows that were due again in 2026. 

Topping this outstanding consignment was Ellaway Dreambig Wheatley who sold for 4,600gns to the Wormanby herd.  This close to perfect young cow was sired by Kings-Ransom Dreambig, she was milking in her third and was due again to Denmire Pioneer for next spring. 

Topping the heifers was Ellaway Morfor Judyann who sold for 3,900gns to the Robinson family from Brampton.  She was giving 45kgs having calved back in May.

The Graves family would like to thank everyone who supported their sale and wish all the purchasers much success with their Ellaway cattle.

Drointon Summer Heatwave Sale

Andrew and Debbie Mckellar owners of the famous Drointon Herd consigned 18 beautiful heifers from their leading cow families.  These included the Jodie, Promis, Marqi, Sharon and Rhapsody lines. 

Peter Cotton, David Gray, Auctioneer Glyn Lucas, Emily Rouse on the halter of the top price Drointon Alpha Seisme Red sold for 5000gns to telephone bidders Paul, Jane & Daniel Knight, Arran Smith, Cayden Lawrie and Andrew MacKellar (Drointon Holsteins).

This was the best group from Drointon to ever sell at Borderway and topped at 5,000gns for Drointon Alpha Seisme Red who was bought by Paul, Jane & Daniel Knight from Leicestershire.  This classy Red & White heifer is bred from greatness with no less than five of her ten dams all winning shows at National level in both the UK, Canada and the USA. 

Dam of the top price: Drointon Ryder Db Seisme Red VG87 (2yr)

This very special group of heifers averaged £2266 with two other stars selling for 3,000gns.  The first was for Drointon Grayridge Alpha Gorgeous Red who was bought by Mr Oldfield from near Gisburn.  She was bred from 22 generations of Excellent or Very Goods from the Golden-Rose Goldrush line of the Pinehurst Rapture cow family.

Also selling for 3,000gns was a super attractive March born calf, Drointon Army So Very Special, bred from a maximum classified dam going back the Derrwyn herd in the USA.  She was bought by the Ogden’s from Pears Ghyill Farm near Penrith.

The next dairy sale takes place on farm on Thursday 30^th July and features 200 pedigree Holstein cattle in the HighHopes & Halcyon Dispersal Sale.
