Borderway Primestock Sale

PRIME BULLS: A record show of 171 Prime bulls forward at Borderways weekly sale, trade on the whole would see an easing on the week.  Despite this the very best quality and the very plainest bulls every bit as dear it was everything in between that was easier.

Topping the sale overall was a Limousin from Messrs Graham, Airthrey Farm, Stirling, this weighed 946kgs and sold to £3935.36 to A & D Meats, Messrs McCornish, Boreland Farm, Newton Stewart sold top Charolais bull to £3470.96 for 1009kgs.  Messrs Laird, Lochhead, Fife sold best British Blue cross to £3099.42.  A day’s top pence per kilo of 416p also went to the top overall pounds per head bull from Airthrey Kerse, Stirling.  Next best at 410p was 748kgs from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith and best British Blue cross at 402p came from Lochhead Farm, Fife.

Dairy bred bulls sold to £2070.60 for a 714kg Holstein Friesian to £2048.32 for 692kg from Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith.  A top pence per kilo of 318p went to a 581kg Montbeliarde from Seymour Farm, Wigton.  Holstein Friesians to 311p for 636kgs from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan and Friesians to 308p for 548kg from Messrs Inman, Allerbeck Farm, Lockerbie.

PRIME CATTLE : No Special sale required to get quality and numbers into Borderway as this week sees an excellent entry of 98 Prime steers and heifers equating to 269 Prime cattle marketed and a total of 530 head of cattle forward including cows.

Weight proved the hardest to sell on the whole but everything else would see a lift on the week.  Topping the sale overall today was one of the furthest travelled, this was a 739kgs Limousin cross selling to £3015.12 from Messrs Wilson, Cassindilly Farm, Fife.  Next best steer at £2914.60 was a 767kg Limousin cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby.  Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold a 36 month old Galloway cross steer to £2792.58 for 763kgs.  A top pence per kilo of 408p went to the overall pounds per head steer from Cassindilly Farm, Fife.

Heifers were a great trade throughout with more demand evident.  Top overall was a 700kg Limousin cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby at £2828.00 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Blake, Halfway Well , Penrith sold next best at £2662.50 for a much lighter 625kgs to Steven Wilson, Butchers Shops, Corby Hill & Brampton and Messrs Graham, Airthrey Kerse Farm, Stirling sold an OTM to £2617.16 for 719kgs.  Top overall pence per kilo of 426p went to a 625kg Limousin cross from Halfway Well, Penrith, next best at 420p was a sweet 565kg Limousin cross from Messrs Spence, Roberthill, Lockerbie who’s consignment of seven averaged 407.39

Spring Lambs:  Borderway bucked the trend yet again, selling dearer than other centres last week despite a falling trade. Vendors from all over Scotland, Cumbria and Northumberland flooded into Borderway today to take advantage of the trade.

1025 head average 328.2ppk or £151.56.

Topping the trade today at £221 was a Millennium Bleu from Messrs Abbott, Corrie Field. Weekly consigners Messrs Wigham, Park Burntfoot topped the ppk at 416 for a Dutch Texel.
