Darnlaw Top At £4,200
Holstein heifers average over £3300
Borderway was brimming with an array of top quality dairy cattle for the first dairy sale of August attracting buyers from across the UK. Freshly calved animals remain in strong demand with the sentiment in the dairy industry currently high as milk producers look to the future with enthusiasm in the hope for improved margins.
For the second month in succession trade topped at £4,200 with an overall average of more than £3000 for milking cows and heifers. Values continue to rise month on month as supply tightens and demand especially for high production animals with high genetic potential. In Calf heifers topped at £3000 and bulling heifers topped at £1900 with buyers recorded from 23 countries across England, Scotland and Wales.
Topping the sale at £4,200 was Townlaw Victor Lupin who was consigned by the Sloan family from Darnlaw Farm in Ayrshire. She was a second calver and was sired by Legend-Maker Victor and bred from an Excellent dam with high production. Three other cows and heifers from this farm sold to average £3850.
Holstein milking heifers topped at £3750 for Errolston Kitami Sylvia who was consigned by the Davidson family from Errolston Farm near Gretna. She was Polled and bred from an Excellent Brewmaster dam with production records over 15000kgs.
Overall top price in the milking heifers went to the Davidson family’s Halmyre herd near Castle Douglas. They consigned ten excellent cows and heifers all producing oceans of milk and topped with a star from their Ladybird cow family. Halmyre Urr Elevated Ladybird had been Champion Heifer at the recent Stewarty Show and was the winning heifer at Dumfries County Show last weekend. She sold for £3800 with the complete consignment coming to an impressive average of £3077.
The Wadsworth family from Big Balcraig Farm sold eighteen heifers in milk to average £3461 and topped at £3700 on several occasions. The first was sired by Chase and was giving 40kgs.
The Baxter’s from Park House Farm near Carlisle averaged over £3600 for their powerful consignment again topping at £3700 on several occasions. These heifers were producing large volumes of milk and sired by Denovo Highlight and Winstar Meadow P.
In-calf heifers sold to £3,000 for a powerful framed heifer sired by Helium and due to the Angus in September. She was consigned by Wadsworth family from Big Balcraig Farm.
The Airey family from high regarded Newcroft Holstein herd near Kendal sold 50 young heifers. They were all from their leading cow families including the Quinn, Rinze, Oralie, Ghost, Ivory and Elegance lines. Topping this impressive consignment was Newcroft Adorable Oralie who sold for £1850 she was a May born heifer and was sired by Stantons Adorable and bred from a Statons Chief dam.
Bulling heifers topped at £1900 for Linglane Captain Avis who was consigned by the Donals’s from Ling Farm. She was sired by Genosource Captain with a PLI+449.
