STOWBECK TOP WITH CHAMPION MAVIS
August Border & Lakeland sale averages £3054
One of the best group of cows and heifers ever offered in the Border & Lakeland Sale went under the hammer in the August event hosted at the famous Borderway Sale Centre. Trade topped at 3,650gns with the overall average coming to £3,054 with 59 animals selling for or more than £3000.
The show was judged by Patrick Morris-Eyton from Beckside Farms in Cumbria and was sponsored by PlugIn Genetics. His overall Champion went to Stowbeck Crushabull Mavis who was signed by the Wilson family from Skirwith Hall Farms in Cumbia. This perfectly built heifer was sired by Crushabull and was bred from a deep cow family with ten generations all classified either Excellent or Very Good and many with massive lifetime production. Another ten animals from the Stowbeck sold to average over £3000.
The Reserve Champion went to the winning cow, Errolston Attico Zwartina who was consigned by the Davidson family from Errolston Farm near Gretna. She was freshly calved in her third lactation and was giving 60kgs. She topped the cow trade selling for 3,100gns with a further seven heifers to average £3172.
Three heifers sold for 3,500gns including Parkend Rubels Betsy who was consigned by the Weatherup family from Fife. She was sired by Rubels Red and was giving 49kgs, she was bred from a super line of cows going back to the Excellent 94 Atwood Betsy. Six other cows and heifers sold from the Lesmay herd to average £3150.
Also selling for 3,500gns was Berryholme Davinci Flo who was consigned by the David Wright from Kendal. She was bred from six generations of Excellent dams going back to the three National Champions, Shottle Flo, Storm Flo and Eclipse Flo. The Berryholme herd sold seven heifers to average £3232.
The third heifer to sell for 3,500gns was Broadmeadows Renegade Carol who was consigned by the Awde family from Broadmeadows Farm in Cumbria. She was sired by Renegade and was bred from a VG89 dam with production over 13000kgs and butterfat over 5% and protein over 3,8%. This was the first time for Broadmeadows consigning to the Border & Lakeland Sale with their ten heifers averaging an impressive £3186.
The Yuill family from Lanarkshire sold another outstanding consignment of heifers selling five to average £3286 and topped with Netherside Watson Gail selling for 3,450gns. She was the highest production heifer in the sale giving 49kgs and was one of the highest genomic heifers in the sale.
Bluedail Farm in Allonby owned by the Hetherington family sold an outstanding group of In Calf heifers all due in September and October to the Angus. They topped at 2,500gns for Bluedail Idol who was sired by King Doc. This powerful group average £2420.
The sale concluded with two beautiful heifer calves from Ben and Holly Dyer from Kent. They sold Holben Hudson Lynzi for 2,600gns. She was the 5th place Junior calf at UK Dairy Expo in March and is a great grand daughter of Windbrook Lynzi.
The next dairy sale takes place on farm on Friday 21st August and features 244 pedigree Holstein cattle in the Breachgorse Dispersal Sale. This sale comprises freshly calved cows and heifers, dry cows, in calf heifers and bulling heifers and heifer calves.
