Kirkby Stephen Breeding sheep Sale inc Boom Town Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd Kirkby Stephen held their annual sale of Continental, Mule Ewes and Shearlings when a catalogued entry of 800 sheep were on offer.

Boom Town Boys sale of Breeding Rams.

The Boom Town Boys sale was a fantastic success topping at £2700 for the first placed Texel and Reserve Champion, a two shear from Messrs Chester, Grassgill Lodge, Soulby which was purchased by Messrs Hastwell, The Buildings, Kaber.

Next selling for £1850 was a Texel cross shearling from Messrs Slack, Stoneriggs, Hilton which was purchased by Messrs Marwood, Hilltop, Richmond, with this home also selling Beltex cross shearling rams to £1300 selling to Messrs Patchett, West Summerside, Ripon. Texel cross shearlings from this home also sold to £1100 to JM Clark, Murton and £1000 to Messrs Mitchell, Barnard Castle.

Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton sold the second prized Beltex cross ram to make £1800 selling to Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor, Richmond, with the same purchaser also paying £1100 for another Beltex cross also from Messrs Priestley with another from this home also making £1100 selling to Sam Senior, Tadcaster.

The tup judging duties were carried by Haig Murray, The Beeches who awarded the champion rosettes to the first placed cross bred ram from Messrs Buckle, Buckles Farm, Barras with a Beltex cross ram selling to £1700 with Haig backing his judgement and going on to purchase the ram.

This home also sold a Beltex cross shearling ram to £1000 selling to Messrs Robson, Newshead Grange, Malton.

Messrs Tiplady, Red House Farm, Barnard Castle sold a Texel cross shearling to make £1400 selling to Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor, Richmond.

Messrs Scott, Hollins View sold their annual consignment of pure Texel shearlings to top at £1400 selling to Messrs Dargue, Smardale Hall, Kirkby Stephen, with others from this home selling to £1350 to Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall, Kirkby Stephen and £1100 to Messrs Brunskill, Chapel House Farm, Crosby Garret and £1000 to Messrs Atkinson, Waitby Farm, Waitby.

Messrs Hastwell, The Buildings, Kaber sold pure Texel to £1150 selling to Messrs Dargue, Smardale Hall and also £1100 to Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall,

Messrs Sommerville, Lansmere farm, sold Beltex cross shearlings to £1100 selling to Messrs Harrison, Grange Hall, Great Asby. With this home also selling Charollais cross shearling at £1000 to Messrs Patterson, Coupland Beck Farm, Coupland Beck.

Messrs Morland, Starrah Farm, Kirkby Stephen sold a pure Beltex shearling to make £1050 selling to Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall, Kirkby Stephen.

Messrs Askwith, Low Mown Meadows, Crook sold a Texel cross shearling to make £1000 selling to Ellerton, Richmond.

Once again the Boom Town Boys sale was deemed a massive success with a packed ringside of buyers resulting in the Boom Town Boys being the best sale held to date with an overall tup average of £854.44 being achieved, being £127.15 up on the year!

The new annual Continental and Mule breeding sheep sale was also held on Monday afternoon.

Topping this section at £980 was a pure Texel shearling from Messrs Teward, New View Farm, Darlington which sold to Messrs Murray, The Beeches.

With Messrs Murray also purchasing another Texel shearling from Messrs Teward at £650, Messrs Teward also sold Texel shearlings to £750 selling to Messrs Collin, Intake Farm, Barnard Castle and £420 to Messrs Sowerby & Whitfield, Cote House Farm, Bleatarn. The consignment from this home averaged £700.

Messrs Chester, Grassgill Lodge, Soulby sold a two shear Texel ewe to make £660 selling to Messrs Nattrass, Shield Hill Top, Alston.

Messrs Skidmore, Needless Hall, Toronto showed his annual consignment of quality shearlings which topped at £480 for a Texel from Messrs Coulthard, Gill House, Barnard Castle. Beltex cross shearlings from this home sold to make £460 selling to Messrs Tiplady, Red House Farm, Barnard Castle, Pens of Texel shearlings sold to £415, £410 all selling to Messrs Hill & Wright, Doncaster. With the same home selling a pen of Beltex shearlings to £410 also selling to Messrs Hill & Wright.

With pens of Texel and Beltex cross shearlings selling to make £390, £380, £370 with a pen of Blue Texel shearlings selling at £400 selling to Messrs Tiplady, Red House and another pen at £365 to Messrs Maughan, Ash Garth.

This home sold eleven pens of shearlings between £400-£480 with the whole consignment of 70 shearlings from this home selling to average a whopping £375.90

Our pre sale show was kindly judged by Alisdair Prickett, Farleton House, Carnforth who awarded the first rosette to Messrs Skidmore’s pen of five Texel shearlings which went on to sell for £400 with the second rosette also going to Messrs Skidmore with another pen of five Texel shearlings which sold at £405 with both pens being purchased by Messrs Hill & Wright, Tadcaster.

Messrs Chester, Grassgill Lodge sold a pen of Texel shearlings to make £410 also selling to Messrs Hill & Wright, with pens of Charollais cross ewes from this home selling to £375, £345 and £340 twice. Messes Chester topped the Suffolk shearlings at £325.

Messrs Morland, Starrah Farm, Kaber sold Texel cross shearlings to make £360 with this home also selling pens of Beltex shearlings to £340.

Messrs Robinson, Prospect farm sold two pen of Texels to £350 and £345.

Messrs Dodd, Skylin, Temple Sowerby sold a pen of twelve Texel cross ewes to make £345, with this home topping the Mule shearlings at £260 for a pen of ten.

Two pens of Suffolk cross shearlings sold to £290 and £275 from Messrs Robson, Middle Horselyhope Farm, Consett.

Gimmer lambs topped at £202 for a pen of fifteen Suffolk cross texel from Messrs Todd, Victoria Cottages, with the consignment of 50 Suffolk cross gimmer lambs from this home averaging £183.44.

A flying trade for all classes of breeding sheep was witnessed at Kirkby Stephen with it being reported as being the dearest sale seen anywhere so far this year with the following averages being achieved

Texel ewes averaged £408.33

Texel shearlings averaged £359.50

Blue Texel ewes averaged £355

Beltex shearlings averaged £350.

Charollais cross ewes sold to average £339.

Blue Texel shearlings averaged £302.

All breeds of shearlings sold to average £317.19 which was up £79.18 on the year.

All breeds of ewes sold to average £264.87 which was up £71.69 on the year.

Cheviot and Suffolk cross gimmer lambs sold to average £181.30.
