WORMANBY LEADS THE WAY WITH CONWAY GLORIETTE

September Border & Lakeland sale averages £3158

Borderway once again attracted an outstanding selection of Holstein cattle for the monthly Border & Lakeland Show and Sale.  Freshly calved animals of the highest quality, in-calf heifers bred from top cow families and bulling heifers and heifer calves with enormous potential were all on offer.  Buyers travelled from across the UK for this special event with buyers recorded from 23 counties across England, Scotland and Wales.

Trade topped at 3,700gns on several occasions with the overall average for milking cattle coming to £3158. In-Calf heifers averaged £2520 with the Brownfield bulling heifers topping at 2,300gns to average £1848.

The show was judged by Joseph Bowness who is one of the up-and-coming stars within the Border & Lakeland HYB club and was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group.  He selected Wormanby Conway Gloriette as his overall Champion and she went on to top the sale at 3,700gns.  She was consigned by Wormanby Farms owned by the Hodgson family from Carlisle who have recently placed third in the Holstein UK Premier Herd Competition and were Premier Exhibitors at last week’s National Holstein Show.  She was bred from eight generations of Excellent or Very Goods, her grand dam is a herd favourite, currently milking in her ninth lactation having produced over 110 ton lifetime. 

Sponsor representative Evie Ford, Barry Gillespie from Ploughlands Holsteins, judge Joseph Bowness, David Hodgson from Wormanby Farms, Emily Cartmell and Zoe Marston from sponsors Paragon.

The Reserve Champion went to Ploughlands Bullseye Kari who was consigned by the Gillespie family from near Wigton.  She was sired by Bullseye and was bred from a strong line of dams.  She sold for 3,100gns with another three animals from the Ploughlands consignment selling to average £3535.

Boclair Pursuit Gypsy 3 sold for 3,700gns, she was consigned by the Brewster family from near Glasgow.  She was sired by Pine-Tree Pursuit and will complete the four generation of Excellent or Very Goods, with her dam and grand dam both completing lactations over 16000kgs.  The Boclair herd were named as runners up in the recent Holstein UK Premier Herd Competition after being named Champion Scottish herd for the third consecutive year.

Wormanby Holstein sold six top quality heifers to average £3631 that included, Wormanby Has It All Rose who sold for 3,700gns.  Her first five dams were all pointed in the top two grades and all had completed massive lifetime yields. 

The sale opened with a special elite selection of embryos from several world renowned Holstein cows that included Siemers Lstr Hanna, Siemers Lambda Paris and Milksource Sephora.  They topped at 1,300gns for embryos from Siemers Lmda Paris by Tentastic with the resulting heifers being sisters to genetic giants such as Parfect and Pazzle who are marketed by Select Sires. 

A small selection of In Calf heifers were consigned by Richard Carlile from Longtown and they topped at 2,550gns twice to average £2520.  These heifers were bred from strong cow families and due in December to January to the Angus.

The main event of this month’s sale was the special youngstock sale from the Brownfield Herd owned by Matthew Gemmel from Dumfries.  The Brownfield herd averages 11402kgs 4.57% butterfat and 3.41% protein and has been well known for its high quality Holsteins for many years.  The heifers selling in this sale were aged from April 2025 to April 2026 and averaged £1848 for an outstanding group of bulling heifers.

Brownfield Raiton Gwen topped the sale selling for 2,300gns she was sired by Lars-Acres Raiton with her first three dams all classifying Very Good. Her dam was sired by Mecca P had records to 5.77% butterfat and 3.91% protein and the grand dam had records to 5.07% butterfat and 3.70% protein.  She was the highest index heifer in the sale with a PLI +£647 and Milk +873.
