Alston Moor Mule Gimmer Lamb Sale

On Wednesday 23^rd September the date highlighted in any sheep farmers calendar, the world renowned ”Alston Moor” sale of Mule gimmer lambs took place at Lazonby market. A market with a reputation which drew a huge ringside of buyers with plenty of new faces seen despite the challenges our southern customers have found. An average of £204.10 was achieved, up £54.60 on the year with stronger lambs selling regularly between £220-£280 mark whilst runner lambs met a superb trade selling between £160-£180. A total of 146 pens which held 10-30 sheep sold over the £200 mark.

The pre-sale show took place on a fine Tuesday evening with a total of 19 pens forward, this years Judge Mr Edwin Holliday, Cumbria & Mr Henry Tustain, Banbury undertaking the honours with Mr John Ackerley standing in as referee. After looking over the pens it was decided that the Bill Armstrong Memorial Trophy was to be awarded to first time winner Mr Edwin Clarke, Howgill Castle which made top price of the day £600 to Judge Henry Tustian. The second prize pen from John & Mandy Smith-Jackson, Lipwood went on to sell for £580 again selling to Henry Tustian. Winning the Peter Kidd Memorial Trophy for the best run of 20 was this year was awarded to Mr Carrick, High Crossgill Farm which went on to sell for £275. The quality of sheep in Lazonby remains unmated, with vendors delighted with their days trading. Many more could have been sold to advantage in the original & foremost Mule centre. A huge thank you must go to all staff, vendors & purchasers for once again making this the leading sale of Mule gimmer lambs in the UK.
