On Wednesday 7th October Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of calves with fewer numbers forward, with 266 calves sold. Although the overall quality was slightly less than in previous sales, and the real top-end calves were not present, trade remained exceptionally strong throughout. The sale averaged £502.98, demonstrating the continued strength and confidence currently present in the calf trade. Buyers keen for quality calves across all breeds and some tremendous prices at the top end. A strong average too, giving vendors plenty of encouragement and showing real confidence in the beef trade being restored.
Today’s sale was topped at an impressive £990, achieved twice by Charolais bulls from D&M Irving Farming, Brunt Hill. These standout prices highlighted the strong demand for quality continental bulls, with buyers continuing to compete hard for calves with the breeding and potential to perform further down the line.
Blue calves were very much in the sellers’ favour today, proving to be the best cattle to sell on the day. The Blues topped at £900 from Coopon Carse Farms, Palnure, with the same home also taking the top spot for heifers at £870. A further Blue from this great home reached £860, showing the consistency and quality coming forward from this farm.
Next in line was an Angus calf from Messrs Reed of Moss Side House, making £840, adding further strength to the top end of the sale. These leading prices demonstrate that, despite fewer numbers and a slight reduction in overall quality, buyers remain prepared to pay strongly for well-bred calves.
The continued strength of the beef trade is clearly having a positive effect on the calf market. With finished cattle currently commanding strong prices, confidence has been restored and buyers appear increasingly willing to invest in calves, knowing there is good potential in the finished product. This confidence is filtering back through the market and providing a strong platform for calf values.
