PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 108 young bulls were forward, although quality was perhaps not as strong overall. Demand for the best-end heavy bulls remained very firm, with thirteen animals selling in excess of £3,000 and two surpassing the £4,000 mark.

Topping the day at £4,196.00 was a 1,049kg Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton. Close behind was a 1,218kg Charolais from Messrs Campbell, Thrunton, Alnwick, selling for £4,116.84. British Blues peaked at £3,761.58 for an 883kg bull from Messrs Forrester, Down by Rigg, Carlisle, which also achieved the highest price per kilo on the day at 426p/kg.

Despite some expectations of a slightly easier trade, the market proved more resilient than anticipated, with a good ringside of buyers forward all classes met keen demand, ensuring cattle sold to a very satisfactory trade from start to finish, with vendors well rewarded for well fleshed stock.

PRIME CATTLE : A much lighter entry was forward overall totalling to 68, with a greater proportion of dairy-bred cattle on offer. Despite this, all classes proved a pleasure to sell, with buyers keen to compete throughout and quality stock once again commanding a premium.

Leading the steer section was a superb 790kg British Blue cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle, selling to £3,412.80, which also topped the pence-per-kilo at 432ppk. Well-fleshed, heavy steers were in particularly short supply and met with strong demand from start to finish.

Quality heifers peaked at £3,229.08 for a 758kg Limousin cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby. Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth sold a 686kg heifer to £2,858.00, highlighting the strength of demand for well-fleshed butcher's cattle.

The top pence-per-kilo heifer honours were secured by another outstanding 645kg Limousin cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby, which realised 432ppk.

With fewer heavy cattle forward and a larger proportion of dairy-bred stock on offer, the trade remained exceptionally resilient, once again demonstrating that quality cattle continue to be highly sought after at Borderway on a weekly basis.
