SALE OF SUCKLER CALVES
TUESDAY 3rd November
On Tuesday 3rd of November Harrison & Hetherington held the highly covited Suckler Calf Sale in Middleton-in-Teesdale Mart.
A catalogued entry of 421 were forward in what is one of the highest renowned sales in the beef breeding calendar. Buyers from all over the UK were present with classes keenly bid for. A big thank you goes to all customers for your support.
Before the sale this year’s show took place with judge Mr Haig Murray undertaking proceedings. After looking over all the classes, it was decided the Champion be awarded to the first prize British Blue steer from Messrs Illinson, West Briscoe, which was later sold for £3,300, selling to the judge.
The Reserve Champion and Champion Female went to the 1st prize Limousin heifer which came from J & J White, Rigg Farm, which went on to sell for £3,350. The same home also sold Limousin heifers to £3,400 and £2,750.
Top price of the day, however, went to a flashy British Blue heifer from David Mallon, Pallett Cray, selling to £3,600 to Messrs Huck, Lancaster.
Cattle went on to average £1,711. Despite being less on last year’s extreme rates, the sale was described as £000’s dearer than any other local outlet and customers are reminded that the ages of these cattle were 6–7 months.
Commercial steers topped at £2,440 from Messrs Watson, Stoney Hill, for a super Limousin bullock. Messrs Walton, Lune Head, saw a flashy Limousin heifer selling to £2,900, as did Messrs Scott, Low House, selling to £2,150.
A good day was had with vendors more than satisfied with the day’s trading
