Borderway Weekly Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 25^th November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep where a larger show of 540 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward, along with 2830 prime and cast sheep.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A great show of 390 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with trade being as good as last week’s flying trade.

Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill sold an outstanding Limousin cow for 874kg at 182.5p totalling £1595 to Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Messrs Kemp, Whitwell Farm’s run of cows topped at 772kg at 179.5kg totalling £1385 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm’s run of cows topped at 831kg at 163.5p totalling £1358 for a Limousin x bought by Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs Eggleston, Thornham Hill Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 997kg at 135.5p totalling £1350 to Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ridley, Demesne Farm sold a Limousin x heifer for 827kg at 161.5p totalling £1335 to Les Fell. Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley sold the top priced Charolais cow selling for 916kg at 143.5p totalling £1314 to Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs MacDonald Ladyhousesteads sold a Limousin x heifer for 683kg at 187.5p totalling £1280 to Sean McGimpsey.

A mixed show of Black & White cows was on offer with trade being 5p up on the week. Messrs Vance & Sons, Sloehabbert Farm’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 851kg at 117.5p totalling £999 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Cannon, Espland Hill’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 862kg at 114.5p totalling £1986 and 813kg at 117.5p totalling £955 to Les Fell and Dovecote Park. Messrs MacDonald, Ladyhousesteads sold a Holstein x cow for 777kg at 124.5p totalling £967 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Bland, The Flatt sold the top priced Friesian cow for 815kg at 118.5p totalling £965 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Gardhouse, Cumdivock House sold a Holstein x cow for 716kg at 133.5p totalling £955 to Les Fell.

CAST BULLS – A good show of 10 stock bulls were on offer Messrs Steel, Lesson Hall sold a Limousin stock bull for 1134kg at 129.5p totalling £1468 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill sold a Limousin stock bull for 1161kg at 125.5p totalling £1457 to Messrs Kirkpatrick.

PRIME BULLS – On Monday 9^th December Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 85 prime bulls. Trade for all classes was considerably up on the week with Black and Whites being in strong demand. Topping today’s sale was an outstanding pure Limousin bull consigned by Messrs Logan, Humebyres selling for £1857, another bull from the same home sold for £1819. Second top price of £1831 came from Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields. Black and Whites sold up to £1121 from Messrs Wilson, Old Church. Top pence per kilo at 225.5p was a muscley Blonde bull consigned by Messrs Wilshaw, Oulton Hall once again more bulls could be sold to vendors benefits.

PRIME CATTLE – Prime cattle at Borderway saw a very mixed run of 66 forward. Top price of the day was for a Limousin x steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton which sold for £1672, weighing in at 776kg selling to 215.5ppk. Top price per kilo was achieved by Messrs Rogerson, Maisongill, Appleby-In-Westmorland seeing their Limousin heifer weighing 574kg and selling at 226.5ppk.

PRIME SHEEP – On Monday 9^th December Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of 2705 prime lambs. Despite resistance to the trade early in the sale and less top-quality export sheep offered, Carlisle again provided excellent returns for all classes, weights and grades. An overall average of 189.9p (SQQ 196.9p) was achieved equating to £87.30 a head.

The sale topped at £113.80 on two occasions both for exceptional continental cross lambs. Firstly, a delectable Dutch Texel Lamb from Messrs Laird, Unity Farm, Brampton and secondly for a beautiful Beltex from Ivanhoe Livestock, Wyvill Grange, Bedale which also topped per kilo at 271p. Both lambs sold to local butchers Mullhollands, Great Orton.

Heavy lambs sold to great rates to a top of of £106.30 for a pen of Suffolks from Messrs Story, Jackson Rigg, Longtown which sold to John Worsley and topped at 147.4ppk for Messrs Laird, Unity Farm.

Mule lambs met another flyer with Mr JW Smith-Jackson selling his run of heavies to average a £92.64. Neil Marston, Millstone Moor sold a great pen of 40 to top per kilo at 189.3p (44kg £83.80).
