A smaller show of quality Galloways was on offer at the Society’s Autumn Show and Sale at Harrison and Hetherington’s Carlisle Mart, female averages increased on the year and Galloways were in demand with seven new purchasers successfully bidding to establish new herds.
The female champion and top price of the day was Drumhumphry Babs 1397 from AM Brown, Drumhumphry, Corsock, Castle Douglas. This November, 2017 born, intermediate bulling heifer is a Jake of Nether Rusko daughter, she sold for 1900gns to new purchaser Messrs W Routledge, Lordstown Farm, Newcastleton, Roxburghshire.

Female Champion & Top Price 1900gns[/caption]
Next top price of 1800gns was the second last pedigree animal through the ring – Hilda 6th of Kilnstown from Andrew Waugh and Family, Kilnstown, Bewcastle, this March 2018 heifer is by Buccleuch Adonis who was Champion at this year’s Royal Highland Show. This stylish heifer sold to MJ Richardson & Partners, Higher Green Farm, Byley Road, Byley, Middlewich, Cheshire. This was one of four Galloways who travelled south to establish a herd for their young son.
Kilnstown’s other entry Marina 97th of Kilsntown, is again by the RHS champion Bucleuch Adonis and out of Marina 80th who is half-sister to Welling of Kilnstown who won breed champion at this year’s Great Yorkshire show, this April 2018 born junior heifer sold to the judge Sean Martin for 1400gns.
Father and daughter team, Jimmy and Kirsten Wallace from W Wallace & Sons, Fingland, Dalry came south of the border to sell their three females with calves at foot - Urma 16th of Fingland, this July, 2016, Penninghame Trooper daughter sold with a pedigree heifer calf at foot for 1750gns to another new purchaser RM & AE Todd, Eden Park, Renwick, Penrith Cumbria for 1750gns. Molly 199th of Fingland, again a Penninghame Trooper daughter sold with calf at foot for 1400gns to Messrs Richardson, Cheshire and Upperclass 13th of Fingland, this time a Mick Jagger of Fingland daughter and sold with cross calf at foot for 1250gns to K Kempson, Cowper Bottom Farm, Cowper Road, Rossendale, Lancashire.
Messrs N & BM Ireland, Newhouse Farm, Drigg, Holmrook, Carlisle had a fruitful day in the show and sale ring being the most successful day since establishing their new herd in 2013. Top price for this father and son team was 1650gns for the first price heifer in calf – Newhouse Brownie, this Top of Kilnstown daughter and out of Brownie 109th of Miefield, was sold having ran with a Whitebred Shorthorn and sold to Bluegray breeder TR & KM Wallace, Farney Shields, Ninebanks, Hexham. The Wallace Family then secured the other two heifers from the Newhouse herd, both Top of Kilnstown daughters and having ran with the Whitebred Shorthorn, Newhouse Greta made 1500gns, this April 2017 born heifer, is out of Drumhumphry Greta and Newhouse Claretta 3rd a 26 month old heifer is out of Claretta 24th of High Creoch and sold for 1380gns. In the show ring Greta and Brownie received the Isaac Hedley Cup for Best Pair of Calving Heifers.
The McMillan team from Messrs Wallace, Over Barskeoch, Dalry, Castle Douglas had two entries which attracted bids of 1620gns and 1600gns for Biddy of Over Barskeoch and Banoffee of Over Barskeoch respectively, both Penninghame Windfall daughters these 26month old heifers sold to B Douglas 15 Ganvaughan Road, Castle Derg, Co Tyrone and D & W Bowman, Bagbie Farm, Carsluith, Newton Stewart.
Regular consigner W & M McMorran, Miefield, Twynholm, Kirkcudbright sold Brownie 125th of Mielfield and Nancy 86th of Miefield, both Ruler of Kilsntown daughters and sold with Bluegrey calves at foot to WD & R Elliot, Burnfoot, Ewes, Langholm for 1600gns and 1500gns respectively.
Another regular consigner, GJ Kyle Spout Bank, Walton, Brampton sold the third prize incalf heifer Jess of Boadhold for 1600gns, this Strachan of Fingland daughter, was purchased in a private deal from Miss JH King and was sold incalf to a Whitebred Shorthorn bull to new purchasers J R Handley, Craik Trees Whinfell, Kendal, Cumbria.
Mr TJ Robinsons, Ottercops, Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland had a successful day on his first outing to a pedigree show and sale receiving first prize in the senior bulling heifer class with Rose 3rd of Ottercops. This stylish, well presented heifer was very ably shown by his son Philip, a Walter of Miefield daughter she sold to Messrs MJ Richardson & Partners, Higher Green Farm, Byley Roady, Byley, Middlewich, Cheshire for 1550gns
They were only two bulls forward for sale Winston and Montgomery of Softley from TD & M Moore, Softley, Slaggyford, Brampton, these February 2018 born, Gauntlet of Softley sons were sold for 1000gns and 900gns. Winston was purchased by RA Cornelius, West Rose, St Breward, Bodmin and Montgomery went home with JW Forster & Sons, Smithsteads, Bewcstle, Carlisle.
